BACHELOR OF ARTS IN ENGLISH

OBJECTIVES
The English program seeks to graduate students who have mastered the principles of grammar and composition, who have a sound knowledge of the development of literature and intellectual culture, and who have the ability to interpret individual literary works intelligently. Programs are designed for students preparing for careers in a variety of fieldsincluding elementary, secondary and higher education; journalism; communications; advertising; social work; theology; law; and government.

OPTIONS

A. B.A. in English: six hours of English Composition from the University Core Curriculum requirements, six hours of lower-division literature survey courses, 30 hours as specified, 18 hours in a minor, and four semesters of a foreign language
B. Minors in English, English as a second language, and American Sign Language: 18 hours for each program
C. Elementary teacher certification: Language Arts Composite Specialization, 30 sem. credit hrs.; English as a first specialization, 24 sem. credit hrs.; and Generalist Composite Specialization, 21 sem. credit hrs.
D. Secondary teacher certification: B.A. in English and prescribed education courses
E.

Endorsement in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL): twelve hours of approved courses, three hours of student teaching, and an elementary or secondary teaching specialization

BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE REQUIREMENTS IN ENGLISH
Total Semester Credit Hours=124

The B.A. in English degree requires the completion of 124 hours, as follows:

A. University Core Curriculum (47 hrs.)
B. A minimum grade of C in English courses
C. Thirty semester credit hours as specified below, including at least 12 hours at this university:
 

1. Writing about literature and either grammar, history of English
the nature of language, or the history of rhetoric:

MINOR IN AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE (ASL)
This minor is available only in conjunction with a B.A. degree in English.

A. 12-14 hours of lower division beginning and intermediate ASL taken at community college or other university, AND
B. 12 hours of upper division ASL and English as follows:
ENGL 4376: The Nature of Language
ENGL 4377: Acquisition and Development of English as a Second Language
EDSL 4310: American Deaf Culture
EDSL 4320: Methods of Teaching ASL/Practicum

MINOR IN ENGLISH OR TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (TESL)
English may be chosen as a minor to satisfy bachelors degree requirements in other fields. This program requires a total of 18 hours in English, 12 of which must be advanced. Courses are selected by the student in consultation with a member of the English faculty. The minor in teaching English as a second language requires 12 hours in Teaching English as a Second Language and six hours in multi-cultural studies or foreign language.

TEACHER CERTIFICATION
Candidates for elementary teaching certificates should pursue the Bachelor of Science degree in interdisciplinary studies or a standard academic major related to the Texas Public School curriculum. Candidates for secondary teaching certificates should pursue a standard academic major. For other certification requirements, consult the College of Education and Psychology section of this catalog.
