OBJECTIVES
The English program seeks to graduate students who have mastered the principles
of grammar and composition, who have a sound knowledge of the development
of literature and intellectual culture, and who have the ability to interpret
individual literary works intelligently. Programs are designed for students
preparing for careers in a variety of fieldsincluding elementary, secondary
and higher education; journalism; communications; advertising; social
work; theology; law; and government.

MINOR IN
ENGLISH OR TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (TESL)
English may be chosen as a minor to satisfy bachelors degree requirements
in other fields. This program requires a total of 18 hours in English,
12 of which must be advanced. Courses are selected by the student in consultation
with a member of the English faculty. The minor in teaching English as
a second language requires 12 hours in Teaching English as a Second Language
and six hours in multi-cultural studies or foreign language.
TEACHER
CERTIFICATION
Candidates for elementary teaching certificates should pursue the Bachelor
of Science degree in interdisciplinary studies or a standard academic
major related to the Texas Public School curriculum. Candidates for secondary
teaching certificates should pursue a standard academic major. For other
