BACHELOR OF ARTS OR SCIENCE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS IN SOCIOLOGY

The Bachelor's Degree in Sociology requires the completion of 124 semester hours, as follows:

A. University Core Curriculum (47 hrs.)
B. A minimum grade point average of 2.0 in upper-division courses in sociology, including a 2.0 average in a minimum of 12 upper division hours taken in the major at this university
C. A minimum of 36 semester hours of sociology, of which at least 24 must be upper-division.
  1. Required Core Courses (18 hrs.)
    SOCI 1301 or SOCI 1306: or SOC 2330
SOCI 3396: Social Research Methods or CRIJ 4322
SOCI 3370: Sociological Theory
SOCI 2326: Social Psychology
SOCI 3315: Social Stratification
SOCI 4397: Senior Research Seminar (required in last semester of program)
  2. Upper-division Sociology electives in chosen consultation with the students major advisor. (18 hrs.)
    Specialization areas (students may choose Sociology and Social Science electives from the specialization areas below)

E. FOR THE BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE: In addition to the above, at least four semesters of a foreign language or a satisfactory grade on a written examination approved by the foreign language faculty.

SOCIOLOGY AS A MINOR
Sociology may be chosen as a minor to satisfy requirements for certain bachelor s degree programs with majors in other fields. This program consists of 18 semester hours in sociology, at least twelve hours of which must be advanced, which the student chooses in consultation with the major advisor.

TEACHER CERTIFICATION
To be certified to teach sociology or social studies in the public schools of Texas, the student must meet state certification requirements. Courses to meet these requirements are offered by the College of Education and Psychology and may count as a part of the electives outside the sociology major. At least six hours of sociology must be completed at UT Tyler with a minimum grade point average of 2.0 in sociology courses, including a 2.0 average at this university.
