SPEECH COMMUNICATION

OBJECTIVES
Whether one seeks a career in teaching, law, the ministry, business, government, the arts, or social services, the ability to communicate is essential to success. The speech communication program offers the student an opportunity to develop effective communication skills through courses in rhetoric and public address, interpersonal and small group communication, business and professional communication, communication theory, and oral interpretation of literature.

OPTIONS:

A. B.A. in speech communication: 36 hours in speech communication, 21 of which must be upper division, and 12 upper division hours in the major must be taken at this university; 18 hours in a minor; and four semesters of a foreign language
B. B.S. in speech communication: 36 hours in speech communication, 21 of which must be upper division and 12 upper division hours in the major must be taken at this university; 18 hours in a minor; and six hours of mathematics, science, economics, geography and/or computer science, in addition to those otherwise counted as lower-division preparation
C. Speech communication as a minor: 18 hours of speech communication, 12 of which must be advanced
D. Elementary teacher certification: 21 hours in speech communication, 12 hours of which must be advanced; and prescribed education courses
1st specialization: 21 hours in speech communication
2nd specialization: 18 hours in speech communication
E. Secondary-Teacher Certification
  1. Speech communication as a first teaching field or as a single teaching field, B.A. or B.S. in speech communication: Completion of the requirements for the B.A. or B.S. degree in speech communication; prescribed courses in a second teaching field, and prescribed education courses
  2. Speech communication as a second teaching field, twenty-four hours of speech communication, 12 of which must be advanced; prescribed courses in a first teaching field; and prescribed education courses.

BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE REQUIREMENTS IN SPEECH COMMUNICATION
Total Semester Credit Hours=124

The B.A. degree in speech communication requires the completion of 124 hrs. as follows:

A. University Core Curriculum (47 hrs.)
B. A minimum grade of "C" in each speech communication course

 Thirty-six semester hours of speech communication, 21 of which must be advanced, and at least 12 upper division hours in the major must be taken at this university:

D. At least 18 hrs. in a single related discipline or at least 18 hrs. of guided electives, 12 of which must be upper division, to be chosen in consultation with the student's major advisor.
E. Four semesters of an approved foreign language: The student may also complete this requirement by passing a written examination approved by the foreign language faculty.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS IN SPEECH COMMUNICATION
Total Semester Credit Hours=124

The B.S. degree requirements in speech communication are the same as those for the B.A. degree except that instead of a foreign language requirement, the student is required to take six hours of mathematics, science, economics, geography and/or computer science, in addition to those otherwise counted as lower-division preparation. These six hours may be taken at the lower- or upper-division.

SPEECH COMMUNICATION AS A MINOR
Speech communication may be chosen as a minor to satisfy certain bachelor degree programs with majors in other fields. This program consists of 18 semester hours in speech communication, at least nine of which must be upper division.

TEACHER CERTIFICATION
Candidates for elementary teaching certificates should pursue the Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies or a standard academic major related to the Texas public schools curriculum. Candidates for secondary teaching certificates should pursue a standard academic major. For other certification requirements, consult the College of Education and Psychology section of this catalog.
