In order to be granted entrance into a baccalaureate degree program in the Department of Business Administration, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be officially admitted to the university
- Meet admission requirements of the Department of Business Administration as shown below
- Provide transcripts to show successful completion of the following prerequisites with a minimum grade of "C' in each course:
- Computer Applications* 3 semester hrs.
- Economic Principles
- Microeconomics 3 semester hrs.
- Macroeconomics 3 semester hrs.
- Math (Finite)** 6 semester hrs.
- Speech (equivalent to UT Tyler's SPCH 3315) 3 semester hrs.
- File a degree plan in the Department of Business Administration with an advisor by the end of the first semester after being admitted to the Department of Business Administration.
*Computer applications adapted to the solution of business problems (equivalent to UT Tyler's COSC 1307).
**Content to be at the level of Calculus or above including exponents and radicals, linear systems, matrices, and linear algebra, exponential functions, logarithmic functions, probability, differential and integral calculus.
OBJECTIVES
The Department of Business Administration prepares students for positions as executives, managers, and specialists in businesses and other organizations. Such an education provides an opportunity to:
1. understand contemporary business culture.
2. appreciate the historical evolution of business, and develop an awareness of the social and economic influences.
3. encourage social responsibility and community service.
4. understand major functional areas of business, their relationships, and develop some degree of specialization and application.
5. prepare for graduate study.
Students are encouraged to establish a firm base of humanities, arts, and sciences, develop analytical capability, investigate major functional areas of business, and recognize that the role of leadership in the modern business system is vitally important for community progress.
DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
- A minimum of 125 semester hours of credit for the degree of Bachelor of Business Administration, at least 63 semester hours must be non-business courses.
- At least 50% of the business courses must be taken at UT Tyler.
- In no event may a student register for the graduation semester until the completion of all prerequisites.
- A minimum grade point average of 2.0 in all upper-division work undertaken and a minimum grade of 'C' in each course in the major.
- A common business core of 36 hrs. The core courses are as follows with variations by major, as noted:
- ACCT Accounting core
- ECON Economics core
- FINA 3311 Principles of Finance
- GENB 3301 Business Law and Social Responsibility
- MANA 3330 Management Information Systems (Accounting majors take ACCT 4391 Accounting Information Systems)
- MATH 1342 Statistics
- GENB 3370 Information and Communication Techniques
- MANA 4395 Managerial Strategy & Policy (To be taken during a student's senior year and within one year of graduation)
- MANA 3311 Organization Behavior and Leadership
- MANA 4305 Production and Operations Management
- MARK 3311 Principles of Marketing
- Eighteen upper-division hours in the major at least three courses in the major must be completed at UT Tyler
- Major In Accounting
- Accounting core - ACCT 3311
- Economics core - ECON 3311 or ECON 3314 or ECON 3317
- The 18 Hours must include ACCT 3312, ACCT 3315, ACCT 3325, ACCT 4380, plus ACCT electives selected with the consent of an accounting advisor. See note below:
- Major In Finance
- Accounting core - Any upper-division accounting course
- Economics core - ECON 3311
- 18 hours of finance courses. The following must be included in the 18 hours: FINA 3330, FINA 4310, and FINA 4340.
- Major In Management
- Major In Marketing
- Twelve additional upper-division hours. At least six of these hours must be taken in the field of business administration.
Note: Students who wish to qualify to sit for the Certified Public Accountant Examination in May 1998, or thereafter, must have completed 150 semester hours of higher education credits. A student may satisfy this requirement by (1) enrolling in the Master of Business Administration Program or by (2) taking additional courses as a non-degree-seeking student. All accounting students should discuss these options with their advisors early in their accounting studies.
SECONDARY TEACHER CERTIFICATION
A teaching specialization in business administration requires the following 27 semester hours:
- Principles of Accounting 6 hrs.
- Principles of Economics 6 hrs.
- GENB 3301 Business Law and Social Responsibility 3 hrs.
- GENB 3370 Information and Communication Techniques 3 hrs.
- MANA 3315 Management of Organizations 3 hrs.
- FINA 3311 Principles of Management 3 hrs.
- MARK 3311 Principles of Marketing 3 hrs.
State requirements for teacher certification are listed in the College of Education and Psychology section. Students seeking teaching certification in business administration should see a business advisor in the College of Business and Technology.
MINOR IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
A minor in business administration is available to students whose major field is outside the College of Business and Technology. The student must complete 18 upper-division semester hours of business administration courses as outlined below and must meet any prerequisites listed:
- MANA 3311 Organization Behavior and Theory 3 hrs.
- MARK 3311 Principles of Marketing 3 hrs.
- FINA 3311 Principles of Finance 3 hrs.
- ACCT 3311, ACCT 3315, or ACCT 3325*
- Other courses selected from the curriculum of the School of Business Administration and approved by a business administration advisor 6 hrs.
* Prerequisites: ACCT 2301 and ACCT 2302
