UT Tyler Department of Civil Engineering

Disciplines of Civil Engineering

Structural

Design systems of structural members used to support loads for a specified public function such as bridges, buildings, dams and bell towers.

Hydrology

The movement, distribution and quality of water throughout the Earth, and thus addresses both the hydrologic cycle and water resources.

Transportation

Planning and design for the safe and efficient movement of goods and people in a timely manner on highways, water, rail, subway, air and pipelines.

Construction

Managing the building of civil engineering systems from cradle to grave to include coordination between the owner, contractor and designer.

Geotechnical

Design foundation and earthwork systems to support soil itself and transfer loads from structures into the earth while limiting settlements.

Environmental

The application of principles from both science and engineering to improve the environment, to protect resources and to remediate polluted areas.

Surveying

Measurements between physical features to include horizontal distances and elevation differences to determine property lines, lay-out buildings and produce maps.
