Student Learning Communities
The 44 students enrolled with SLC partnered with Tyler PATH’s Adopt A Family Project. The students were given an opportunity to apply critical thinking skills by donating items for the family from the list of basics household needs, and additional items that students felt the family would benefit from. A representative from PATH spoke to the students to provide a more in depth perspective on the family which included social issues of immigration, a parent in prison, government assistance, and lack of transportation. For reflection, students held group discussions on the issues that emerged in the presentation. From this SL project, students gained a perspective on being connected to the community and issues that are faced by those living in this community.
UNIV 1300.012 - Freshman Seminar: Foundations of Leadership
The 22 students enrolled in this course partnered with PATH to collect and donate non-perishable items to assist 200 families. For reflection, student posted a journal entry on this topic: “Discuss your reaction to the conclusion of the class service project. Was it successful, who took on a leadership role, what have you learned from working in this group?”
CMGT 3315 - Construction Design Theory
The12 students enrolled in this course designed and managed the project of cleaning and washing the deck on campus. The students acted as construction managers using there project management expertise to help society and to demonstrate civic responsibility. Following the project students reflected on their contributions in an open class discussion.
