Biography

Dr. Helfers began working at the University of Texas at Tyler in the Fall of 2013 after a twenty-five year career in municipal policing in Texas. His research interests focus on criminal justice education, police officer decision making, and organizational justice within police agencies. His research has been published in the American Journal of Criminal Justice, Criminal Law Bulletin, Criminal Justice Review, International Journal of Police Science and Management, Journal of Ethnicity in Criminal Justice, Journal of Police and Criminal Psychology, and Criminology, Criminal Justice, Law & Society.

Dr. Helfers teaches undergraduate and graduate courses that focus upon Administration, Ethics, and the Police. He is also the program coordinator for the Criminal Justice and Public Administration Masters degree programs. Additionally, he is the faculty sponsor for the criminal justice student association, and serves on graduate level master thesis committees.
