School of Education - Message from Dr. Kathryn Morrison, Interim Director

Dr. Michael OdellWelcome to the School of Education!  As you explore our website you will recognize our commitment to preparing professional educators who make significant contributions to the field of education.  Our faculty is dedicated to enriching the initial and continuing professional development of educators through teaching, scholarship, service, and community outreach.

The School of Education offers undergraduate programs leading to a Bachelor of Science In Interdisciplinary Studies (BSIS) in EC-6, 4-8, and EC-12 Special Education.  We also offer coursework leading to secondary and all level teacher certification.  In addition, we offer graduate programs leading to a Master’s Degree (Master of Arts or Master of Education ) in the areas of Curriculum and Instruction, Early Childhood, Reading, and Special Education.  We take pride in being one of the best professional education schools in the state of Texas.

Our faculty is extensively engaged in research and professional education.  The School of Education houses the East Texas STEM Center, one of seven state funded T-STEM Centers in Texas.  The center focuses on improving Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education in rural school districts across Texas through research, professional development, and student college readiness programs.   Each summer, the School of Education also hosts an Advanced Place Institute and an Early Childhood Institute to provide professional development for in-service teachers.

Together, the School’s students, faculty and staff constitute a remarkable educational community that shares a passion for teaching, learning and schools that serve all of our children.  We seek to engage with our colleagues across the University, educators in P-12 schools, families, and people in the business and government arenas.  All these people contribute essential knowledge and wisdom to the task of preparing educators to succeed in the 21st century.

I am excited about the challenges that I will face as the Interim Director for the School of Education.  I want to express my appreciation to Michael Odell, Professor in the School of Education for his service as Interim Director the past 18 months.  Dr. Odell has returned to his role as Roost Chair, College of Education.

Dr. Kathryn Morrison
