Masters Degrees in Reading
This program is designed for the in-service
teacher or students with the prerequisite courses. Opportunities
for basic preparation for establishing, maintaining, and
evaluating reading programs on a building level or system-wide
basis are included.
Applicants for the Master of Education or Master of Arts
degree with a major in Reading must meet General
Degree Requirements of the College of Education. Applicants
must meet the standards
for admission to and retention in the program. Applications
for program admission are available in the Office of Graduate
Studies and the College of Education and Psychology and
should be completed and returned with all required data.
A student may transfer a maximum
of 9 semester hours of graduate credit in which a grade
of "B" or better has been earned from approved
institutions. Transfer credit must be approved by the student's
advisor. Transfer credit cannot be approved unless an official
transcript of all transfer work is on file in the Office
of Graduate Studies. Transfer credit should be evaluated
and approved prior to the completion of the degree plan.

Although a student is allowed six years to complete
a graduate degree program in reading, the degree requirements
may change during the six-year period as state and local
requirements are revised.
Certifications:
Reading
Specialist
The Reading Specialist (EC-12) certificate
is available at the graduate level. This certification
program requires three years of classroom teaching experience,
a valid Texas teaching certificate, a master's degree,
the completion of an appropriate course sequence and the
required TExES examination.
Master
Reading Teacher
The Master Reading Teacher Certificate
is available at the graduate level. The certification program
requires three years of classroom teaching experience,
a valid Texas teaching certificate, the completion of an
appropriate course sequence, and the required TExES examination.
