Masters Degrees in Special
Education
The Master degree programs in special education are
designed to provide opportunities for academic and practicum
experiences for attaining a variety of professional objectives.
The Master of Arts degree program is structured primarily
as a research-oriented degree with no teacher certification.
The Master of Education degree program is designed to fulfill
academic requirements for certification as a generic special
educator or an educational diagnostician.
Applicants for the Master of Education or
Master of Arts degree with a major in Special Education
must meet General
Degree Requirements of the College of Education. Applicants
must meet the standards
for admission to and retention in the program. Applications
for program admission are available in the Office of Graduate
Studies and the College of Education and Psychology and
should be completed and returned with all required data.
A student may transfer a maximum
of 9 semester hours of graduate credit in which a grade
of "B" or better has been earned from approved
institutions. Transfer credit must be approved by the student's
advisor. Transfer credit cannot be approved unless an official
transcript of all transfer work is on file in the Office
of Graduate Studies. Transfer credit should be evaluated
and approved prior to the completion of the degree plan.
Master of Arts in Special Education
with Special Education Teacher Certification:
Foundation Area: 6 hours

Special
Education Area: 24 hours
- Courses are selected by the student and advisor to
meet student's professional objectives.
Thesis: 6 hours

Education Certification:
Foundation Area: 6 hours

education courses or outside the area of special education

Master
of Education in Special Education
With Educational Diagnostician Certification:
For an individual who already has Special Education certification
at the undergraduate level, a degree plan for Educational
Diagnostician would typically include the following courses.
Course requirements vary, however, based on previous course
experience, and career goals. Students must obtain a degree
plan prior to completing nine semester course hours of
instruction.

*EDUC 5356 is required for certification unless the student
has completed its equivalent at the undergraduate level.
Certifications:
Special Education Teacher
Emphasis in special education provides
the student with the opportunity to deal with academic
and behavioral needs of individuals with disabilities in
a full continuum of educational settings. Field experiences
are selected to be compatible with the student's particular
interests and professional objectives. Certification can
be earned by a person who holds a valid teaching certificate
in certain fields, has completed 24 semester hours of prescribed
course work and who receives a passing score on the appropriate
TEXES examination. The academic requirements for certification
can be completed through a master's degree program.
Educational Diagnostician
Emphasis in educational diagnosis provides
the student with the opportunity to assess the competencies
of individuals in language, sociological , physical, and
behavioral/emotional areas, intellectual functioning and
adaptive behavior, and educational performance using informal
and formal measures, and prescribe individualized education
plans based on test results. The educational diagnostician
certificate requires a valid Texas teaching certificate,
two years of classroom teaching experience, an earned master's
degree, and successful completion of the TExES examination
for certification.
