The University of Texas at Tyler Employee Handbook
INSURANCE PROGRAMS
The University of Texas System sponsors several insurance programs that provide broader coverage at lower costs than would normally be available to employees on an individual basis. These insurance policies include Health, Dental, Life, Long Term Disability, Vision and Personal Accident Insurance. Details of each program are described in booklets given to employees at the beginning of their employment. Please read them carefully. Additional information concerning these programs is given at orientation for new employees. Employees may select other coverage within 30 days of their employment. After the initial 30 days, additions in coverage may be made only through a statement of insurability or open enrollment (when applicable). On September 1, 2003, the Texas Legislature enacted a law requiring a 90 day waiting period for health insurance coverage to commence. All new employees who are not direct-transfers from other state agencies must wait 90 days for their health insurance and prescription medication plan to take effect. The Human Resources Department will assist with enrollment or any questions regarding these coverage options.
