The University of Texas at Tyler Employee Handbook
BREAK PERIODS
The time provided for break periods is taken from the work period without any reduction in time or pay. Break periods are a courtesy extended by the University as a means of ‘breaking’ the work segments. They are generally fifteen minutes in duration. Break periods must be authorized by the supervisor. In some circumstances, an employee may be asked to forego a break period.
Break periods may not be saved or accumulated. They should not routinely be used in conjunction with a meal period to extend the meal period. The omission of a break period does not entitle an employee to leave work early or receive other compensation.
