The Department of Construction Management at The University of Texas at Tyler offers the bachelor of science in construction management degree, preparing students for professional careers and leadership roles in construction and construction-related industries. Construction is the largest industry in the United States with about 7 million employees.

Construction managers plan, coordinate, schedule, budget and supervise subcontractors/trades from project beginning to completion. Construction managers monitor and control the daily activity on a job site and make decisions about construction activities. The main goal of construction managers is to meet clients' requirements and deadlines by producing a functional and financially viable project.

The construction industry has five main sectors:

  • Residential
  • Commercial
  • Heavy/Civil
  • Industrial
  • Environmental

The primary responsibilities construction managers control daily are maintaining the budget, monitoring and updating the schedule to meet deadlines, maintaining a quality product through enforcing building codes and architectural specifications, managing use of equipment and materials and keeping a safe work environment.

Job titles that utilize a construction management degree are construction manager, project engineer, field engineer, superintendent, estimator, scheduler, BIM coordinator/estimator, construction administrator or purchasing manager. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average starting salary ranges from $52,000 to $84,000, depending upon experience.
