TENTATIVE SYLLABUS
SOCI 1301
INTRODUCTOR SOCIOLOGY
Required Text:: James M. Henslen. Sociology: Down to
Earth Approach. 8th ed.
Boston: Pearson and
Ally and Bacon, 2007.
Course Description
This course is an introduction to the
sociological analysis of society, its origins, its
structure, and its functions. The course covers culture,
institutions, and interactions. Specific topics will
include the study of socialization, bureaucracy, social
mobility, deviance, population and social change.
Attendance is required and counts toward the
grade. Class activities are needed to clarify some
issues in the textbook and supplement the textbook.
Homework, testing, and class evaluations are
all provided online using the Blackboard.
Multiple weekly online sessions are required to pass the
course.
Learning Outcomes
This course will survey major areas of
sociology so that students can learn what the field of
sociology encompasses. The goal is for students to
expand their understanding of the world so that they can
assess their interests, and choose their fields of study
intelligently. Specifically, students will
1.
learn new
terms and ideas.
2.
be able to
define sociology and understand its applications.
3.
begin to see
the conditions in the society which require sociological
understanding..
4.
be able to
identify the important historical factors in the
development of sociology.
5.
be aware of
methods of scientific research used in sociology.
6.
use the
Internet to supplement learning and to become life-long
learners
Course Requirements
Enroll on Blackboard
Enroll
on Blackboard. (Before next class to get credit)
After you Log In, click on
the "Courses" tab at the top of the Blackboard window.
Search for your course’s
department in the Course Catalog. Then, search for the
course you want to enroll (If it is not there, you will
need to let your instructor know that it does not show
up.)
When you find your course
name, DO NOT CLICK ON
THE COURSE NAME.
Look for and click on the
"Enroll" button to the right of the course name (If it
is not there, you will need to let your instructor know
that it does not show up.)
Read each assigned Chapters before coming to
class.
Take chapter quiz/activities on Blackboard
before coming to class.
Unlike exams which are timed, these
activities are homework to help you learn and
earn
credit for effort. Do not confuse these learning
activities with testing. Testing in
this
class is NOT for learning. Testing is used only to
assess your knowledge and your ability. For learning,
always turn to your textbook, your notes, or your
instructor.
IMPORTANT: Online
activities will post each Tuesday and Thursday at 6 am.
They will become unavailable in one week. There is no
backtracking once an activity disappears from the
screen.
Attend class punctually.
Please sit in your assigned seat only. I
will take roll at the beginning of the class.
If you are tardy you will loose attendance
credit the same as if you are absent.
Take exams as scheduled. Please note that
midterm exams and the final will be online at assigned
times for this class. Because you can have
open book, your time on each exam
will be limited. You will
not have enough time to look up each answer. Questions
will also be scrambled so that looking something up may
cause you not to finish the test. NOTE: The Blackboard
does not automatically close the test when the time is
up. It is up to you to press SUBMIT button on time. You
will receive a one minute warning signal, however, If
you go over time, one point is subtracted for each
fraction of 30 seconds. (For example 31 seconds equals
2 points).
When you submit your test
check immediately in your grade window to verify that
your test was submitted successfully. If all test
questions are closed-ended you should see your score
immediately. If there is an essay, you will see an
exclamation point to tell you that your test has been
successfully submitted and that it is ready for grading.
Grading
Tentative class schedule below gives you a
distribution of possible points each week.
To
calculate your grade at any time, take the total you
have earned through that week, divide
by the
total possible through that week and multiply by 100.
Then use this scale to determine
your
letter grade
90-100
= A; 80- 89 = B; 70-79 = C; 60-69 = D;
0- 59 = F
“W” is
allowed only through October 29, 2007. After that the
instructor has no “W” option available.
Attendance and Tardiness
Note that you start the
class with 100 pts or 25 % of the grade. You will keep
this until the end of the semester if you enroll on
Blackboard before the second class meets, and you are
never tardy or absent. Each time you are tardy or
absent, 10 points will be subtracted from your overall
grade, indefinitely and without exceptions. Being in
class counts because lectures and class activities are
supplemental to the textbook and cannot be made up.
Attendance grade represents a part of your overall
experience. Subtracting points for tardiness, on the
other hand, is to discourage disrespectful or disruptive
behavior.
Bonus Points.
You can earn 5 bonus points by completing
the anonymous class evaluation survey during December 1st
and 6th, 2007. If you are one percent from
the next grade, this bonus would put you into the higher
grade category. If you like to see your course grade
online by December 14th you also must complete the
course evaluation.
Make Up Policy
General Make Up Policy
Make up exams will only be scheduled for
students who comply with the make up policy. To be in
compliance with the policy the following procedures are
required:
1. Make up request must be submitted in a
business style, 8 ˝ x 11 typed, letter, identifying the
class, student’s full name, the exam missed, and
providing a complete explanation for missing the exam.
2. The letter must be MAILED USING CERTIFIED
US MAIL ONLY at the earliest possible time. NO HAND
DELIVERIES.
3. Only requests with an acceptable
explanation, which can be verified by the instructor
will be considered.
4. The final is not included under this
policy.
5. All make ups will be given on the same
day at the end of the semester as given
in your syllabus.
Make
up Policy for religious reasons.
Students who anticipate
being absent due to religious observance are
requested to inform the instructor, using the above
procedure, before the second class meeting. The letter
also must include dates and the specific reason for each
absence.
Social Security Numbers
The policy of the University of Texas at
Tyler is to protect the confidentiality of social
security numbers. The University has changed its
computer programming so that all students have an
identification number.
Grade Replacement
If you are repeating this course for a grade
replacement, you must file an intent to receive grade
forgiveness with the registrar by the 12th day of class.
Failure to file an intent to use grade forgiveness will
result in both the original and repeated grade being
used to calculate your overall grade point average. A
student will receive grade forgiveness (grade
replacement) for only three (undergraduate student) or
two (graduate student) course repeats during his/her
career at UT Tyler. (2006-08 Catalog, p. 35)
Disability Policy
If you have
disability, including a learning disability, for which
you request an accommodation, please contact Ida
MacDonald in the Disability Support Services offices so
that appropriate arrangements
may be made. In accordance with federal law, a student
requesting disability support services/accommodation(s)
must provide appropriate documentation of his/her
disability to the Disability Support Services
counselor. For more information, call or visit the
Student Services Center located in the University
Center, Room 282. The telephone number is 566-7079 (TDD
