2007-2008 SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PROGRESS POLICY
Regulations for federal and state aid programs require students
to make satisfactory academic progress to receive financial aid funding. UT Tyler's Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy is below.
A. |
Students receiving aid from the programs listed below (grants, student loans, and/or work study) must maintain the grade point average standards required for enrollment as defined in the 2006-2008 UT Tyler Catalog, on page 37-38 for Undergraduates or page 253 for Graduates.
Grant Programs include:
- Federal Pell Grant,
- Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG),
- Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG),
- Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership (LEAP) Grants, and
- Education Affordability Grant
Student Loan Programs include:
- Federal Stafford Loan
- Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan
- Federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS)
- Federal Graduate PLUS Loan, and
Work Study Programs include:
- Federal Work Study
- Texas Work Study
- Working to Success

B. |
Students receiving the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG), National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant, TEXAS Grant, and/or B-On-Time Loan must meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements stipulated by the federal or state regulatory authority governing the program. Those requirements may be found in the program descriptions on the UT Tyler Financial Aid website. |

Undergraduate students receiving Federal Pell Grant funding must complete with a passing grade the minimum number of hours for the enrollment status in which they were funded, as listed below:

D. |
Undergraduate and Graduate students receiving the following types of financial aid must complete with a passing grade a total of six (6) credit hours each semester or 12 hours for the academic year in which funding is received. (Please note that if Federal Pell Grant is received in addition to one of the funds below, the Federal Pell Grant completion requirement must be met in order for students to continue receiving any type of financial aid funding the following academic year.): |
- Texas Public Education Grants (TPEG)
- Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants (SEOG)
- Leveraging Education Assistance Partnership (LEAP)
- Educational Affordability Grant (Ed Aff)
- Federal Stafford Loan
- Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan
- Federal PLUS Loan

Grades of "W" or "I" do not count as completed courses for Satisfactory Academic Progress.

Required hours of completion of the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy will be reviewed on an annual basis, at the conclusion of the Spring semester. Students not meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements will be suspended from receiving ALL financial aid funding for the next academic year. Students suspended from financial aid eligibility will be notified by mail after grades are posted for the Spring semester to the address on file. |

Concurrent enrollment at an area junior or community college will affect Federal Pell Grant awards only. All other forms of financial aid require a minimum of six (6) credit hours at UT Tyler. Students must have Transient Student approval through the UT Tyler Registrar’s Office to receive Pell funding from UT Tyler for concurrent enrollment at an area junior/community college. Additionally, a concurrent enrollment letter from the junior/community college’s Financial Aid Office must be sent to UT Tyler’s Financial Aid Office after the census day for the college. The letter should stipulate the student’s enrollment level and that they are not receiving funding from the junior/community college. |

Undergraduate programs of study must be completed within 170 attempted semester credit hours, including transfer coursework.
Graduate programs of study must be completed within 150% of the required semester credit hours for the program (usually 54 credit hours for a graduate program requiring 36 credit hours). |
H. |
Courses not considered for financial aid funding include:
- Courses taken for audit
- Courses for which a grade of "F" or "I" is received
- Credit hours earned by examination or articulation

Courses repeated to meet degree requirements may be considered for financial aid funding. |
J. |
Students may use summer terms within the same academic year to assist in meeting satisfactory academic progress measures of completion provided they do not receive any type of financial aid for the summer terms and the courses are taken at UT Tyler. Students must notify the Financial Aid Office after grades are posted for courses they are using to make up deficiencies. |
K. |
Students on Financial Aid Suspension may request an appeal of their status if mitigating circumstances exist. The appeal request must be made, in writing, to the Associate Dean of Enrollment Management, and should include documentation that will support the claim. Appeal requests are reviewed by a Financial Aid Appeal Committee. The decision of the Financial Aid Appeal Committee is final. Students will be notified of the outcome in writing. Federal and/or state regulations are not subject to appeal.
