Risk Management and Insurance

The University of Texas System Office of Risk Management provides guidance and expertise to all component institutions regarding risk management programs and initiatives, including the procurement and administration of most insurance policies and programs (except employee and student health insurance) on a System-wide basis.

The University of Texas at Tyler participates in, or has access to, a wide variety of insurance programs offered through UT System, and most insurance needs can be addressed under a System-wide policy.

The purchase of most insurance policies must be approved by the UT System Office of Risk Management in accordance with the Regents' Rules (Rule 80601): "The terms of any insurance policies and surety bonds, other than life, disability, and health insurance policies for any U. T. System institution or for System Administration, shall be negotiated by the Office of Risk Management.''

As the university's risk manager, Lee Murray is responsible for local administration of university insurance policies* and serves as university representative on the UT System Risk Management Advisory Committee. Responsibilities include assisting university departments with insurance coverage questions, risk management concerns and the processing of claims. (See FAQ's – Risk Management and Insurance for further information regarding UT Tyler insurance programs, claims procedures, accident and injury reporting, best practices and liability exposures.)
