Javits FellowshipsFunded by the US Department of Education, 60 to 100 Javits fellowships are awarded for graduate study in the social sciences, arts, and humanities. In addition to a stipend, the fellowship pays tuition and fees directly to the graduate institution. Eligibility is gauged both on academic excellence and financial need. Wellstone Fellowship for Social JusticeThe Wellstone Fellowship for Social Justice aims to advance social justice through health care advocacy by focusing on the unique challenges facing communities of color. Through this fellowship, established to honor the memory of the late Senator Paul D. A minimum GPA of 3.3 is required, and the award includes a scholarship as well as two summer internships. Surfrider Foundation ScholarshipThe Surfrider Foundation seeks applicants for the academic year 2006-2007, Surfrider Foundation Scholarship. These Scholarships were created in honor of the late Thomas Pratte, one of the Foundation's founding members and first executive director. He dedicated his life to advocating the preservation of oceans, waves and beaches. Applications are invited from upper level Undergraduates, Masters and Ph.D. level students from a wide range of fields, including, but not limited to: oceanography, marine affairs, environmental sciences, public policy, community planning and natural resources. All applicants should demonstrate exceptional commitment to academic pursuits, work and/or research in an area consistent with the Surfrider Foundation Mission and Guiding Principles. Deadline: Mid-June Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Education ProgramThis Department of Defense Program is open to undergraduate and graduate students studying in the Science, Mathematics and Engineering fields and provides an annual salary, full tuition, and other normal educational expenses. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, and at least 18 years of age. There is an employment obligation to Department of Defense with this education program. National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowships (NDSEG)Sponsored by the Department of Defense, these fellowships are targeted for those pursuing a graduate degree in science or engineering. Acceptance in graduate school is not necessary before application, and funds can be used for any accredited graduate institution. Deadline: January NASA Graduate Student Research Program (GSRP)The GSRP program awards fellowships for graduate study leading to masters or doctoral degrees in the fields of science, mathematics, and engineering related to NASA research and development. Madison FellowshipsEach year, the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation makes available at least one graduate-level fellowship worth up to $24,000 in each state. Applicants should either be a teacher or plan to become a teacher of American History, American Government or social studies at the secondary school level. After finishing their Master?s degree, scholars are required to teach these subjects in grades 7-12 for one year per each full academic year of study under the fellowship. Deadline: March Gates Millennium ScholarApproximately 1000 awards are given to minority students with financial need. The awards are targeted for undergraduate study in all disciplines or graduate study in mathematics, science, engineering, education, or library science. Applicants should have outstanding academic qualifications, strong leadership potential, and demonstrate a commitment to community service. Although a nomination by a professional educator is required, students are encouraged to approach faculty or administrators if they have interest in this award. Deadline: January EPA - STAR FellowshipsThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, is offering Graduate Fellowships for master's and doctoral level students in environmental fields of study. Master's level students may receive support for a maximum of two years. Doctoral students may be supported for a maximum of three years, usable over a period of four years. The fellowship program provides up to $37,000 per year of support per fellowship. Students do not need to be enrolled in or formally accepted in a full-time graduate program at the time they apply for a fellowship, but proof of enrollment or acceptance must be produced prior to the award of the fellowship. DHS realizes that the country?s strong science and technology community provides a critical advantage in the development and implementation of counter-terrorist measures. Areas of study include: physical, biological, social and behavioral sciences including science policy, engineering, mathematics, and computer science. AIBS Diversity Scholars ProgramRecognizes outstanding minority undergraduate and graduate students. Award includes travel and registration support to scientific meeting of choice, invitation to AIBS annual meeting, and AIBS membership for a full year. The goals of the program are to encourage and support the biology careers of underrepresented minorities and people with disabilities increase the participation of students from these groups in AIBS programs and activities. Fellows work for 10 weeks during the summer at mass media sites nationwide, including the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and NPR. Fellows use their academic training in the sciences as they research, write and report today's headlines, sharpening their ability to communicate complex scientific and technical issues to the public.
