Graduate Admissions

Non-Degree Seeking Admission

We offer several types of Non-Degree Seeking tracks, including Post Baccalaureate Student, Non-Degree Seeking Education Majors (for various teacher certifications and student teaching), Transient, and NEXus Nursing.

No entrance exams (GRE/GMAT/MAT) are required for non-degree seeking admission.

Non-degree seeking: students who wish to take graduate-level courses without working towards a master's degree or graduate certificate. Non-degree seeking students include those seeking graduate courses for personal development, licensure or professional development. Non-degree seeking status should not be used by students whose real goal is to enter a master's or certificate program.

Typically, non-degree seeking students may only complete a maximum of 9 hrs of graduate-level work unless they have special permission from The Graduate School. No more than 9 hours earned as a non-degree seeking student may transfer to a master's or graduate certificate program, at the discretion of the program advisor. Please keep in mind that some graduate programs do not allow non-degree seeking students to take courses in their programs.

For the dean to approve any graduate hours over the 9 allowable hours, you will need to send an email stating that you do not intend to pursue a graduate degree here at UT Tyler, and that you understand that no more than 9 hours of graduate work may apply to any future degree should you change your mind. This email will be forwarded to the dean for evaluation and you will be contacted via email with the dean’s decision.

The process for applying as a non-degree seeking student is the same as applying for a master's degree.

Post-baccalaureate: students who have an earned baccalaureate degree and wish to take additional undergraduate classes only, but not pursue a second baccalaureate degree. Students are not limited in the number of hours of undergraduate work they may complete and will pay undergraduate tuition.

The process for applying as a post-baccalaureate student is the same as applying for a master's degree.

PLEASE NOTE:

All non-degree seeking students (undergraduate or graduate) are ineligible for financial aid. Graduate post-baccalaureate and certification-only students are also ineligible for financial aid.

Detailed Application Instructions

NOTE: Certificate, Internship, and Education professional development students must not select Graduate Non-Degree Seeking or Post Baccalaureate Non-Degree Seeking for your major on the ApplyYourself application, since selecting these will delay the processing of your certification application.

If you are interested in Teacher Certification or other certifications, please contact the advisor or department for application instructions. The advisor will guide you in choosing the correct major, or you can view this list of majors.
