Historically Black Greek-Lettered Organizations

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is the governing body for the nine historically African American fraternities and sororities. It was founded at Howard University in 1930. UT Tyler saw Delta Sigma Theta, an NPHC sorority, colonize in the Spring 2007 semester and is hoping to colonize one NPHC fraternity within the next year.

Men or women desiring membership in an NPHC organization typically organize themselves to form an “interest group.” The interest group then petitions the national organization to colonize a chapter. Once a chapter is established on campus, interested students should watch for flyers when a particular group is hosting their intake “week.” Each NPHC group usually recruits at different times of the year.
