| Active |
An initiated member. |
| Alumna |
A female member who is not affiliated with a collegiate chapter of an inter-/national sorority. The plural is alumnae.

| Alumnus |
A male member who is not affiliated with a collegiate chapter of an inter-/national fraternity. The plural is alumni.
|
| Bid |
An invitation to membership by an NIC or NPC group. |
| Chapter |
A chartered undergraduate or alumni/alumnae unit of an inter-/national fraternity or sorority. |
| Charter |
A chartered undergraduate or alumni/alumnae unit of an inter-/national fraternity or sorority. |
| Colony |
A newly-organized group working toward becoming a chartered chapter of an inter-/national fraternity or sorority. |
| Initiation |
The ceremony in which a pledged new member becomes an active member. |
| Interest Group |
A group of individuals on campus in the first stage of the process leading to installation as a chapter of a Greek-letter organization. |
| Line |
A group of new members in a specific NPHC chapter in a specific semester. |
| New Member/Pledge |
A member of a fraternity or sorority who is not yet an initiated member. |
| Panhellenic |
A Greek word meaning “All-Greek.” |
| Philanthropy |
Active effort to promote human welfare. |
| Recruitment/Rush/Intake |
The processes used to bring in new members of Greek-letter organizations. (“Rush” is considered an obsolete term in many circles. “Recruitment” is used by NPC and NIC groups; “intake” is used by NPHC groups.) |
| Risk Management |
Minimizing risk for fraternities and sororities through policies and procedures that must be followed in order for groups to be insured against lawsuits. |
