Mickie Mwanzia Koster is an Assistant Professor of History in Africa and the African Diaspora at the University of Texas located in Tyler, Texas in the United States.  She has a B.A. in Mathematics and Information Science from Chatham College, MBA from Case Western Reserve University, M.A. in History from Cleveland State University, and a M.A. and Ph.D. in History from Rice University.

She is the recipient of the Junior Scholar Excellence Award in African Studies awarded in 2015 by the University of Texas at Austin. She is the faculty advisor for the Phi Alpha Theta Historical Honor Society and the faculty advisor for the Graduate History Student Association. She was a recipient of the Wagoner Fellowship from Rice University in the United States.

She regularly travels to Africa to conduct oral and archival research, and she frequently presents her research at conferences nationally and internationally. She has published in peer reviewed journal articles, book chapters, dictionaries, encyclopedias, proceedings, and reviews treating liberation and nationalist movements in Kenya, Africa, and the African Diaspora.  Her forthcoming book, The Power of the Oath: Mau Mau Nationalism in Kenya, 1952-1960 examines nationalism, ethnicity, and gender by exploring ritual ceremonies and symbolisms used during the Mau Mau war. Mwanzia Koster is also the co-editor of the 2014 book Hip Hop and Social Change in Africa: Ni Wakati.
