Admission to Graduate Programs

Application Procedure

To apply to a specific master's degree program in the Department of Health and Kinesiology (the M.Ed. Degree in Health and Kinesiology, the M.S. Degree in Clinical Exercise Physiology, or the M.S. Degree in Kinesiology) or to the M.S.I.S. Degree with Health Studies as the first field of study, do the following.

1.   Complete requirements of the Office of Graduate Studies as stated at http://www.uttyler.edu/graduate/admissions.htm, including:

a)   completion of the online application form; and

b)   submission of official transcripts of all college course work

2.   Submit to the Graduate Coordinator of the Department of Health and Kinesiology:

a)   statement of intent to enroll, submitted on the "Declaration of Intent to Pursue Graduate Study" form;

b)   statement of academic and professional goals, submitted on the "Statement of Goals" form;

c)   statements from three references, submitted on "Request for Reference" forms, completed by individuals in professional positions who can validly comment on the applicant’s suitability for graduate studies in general and study in the intended field in particular; and

d)   scores on the General Test of the Graduate Record Exam.

In addition to the items that must be submitted, an applicant may submit other evidence related to potential for success in the requested graduate degree program. To be guaranteed consideration, all application materials must be received in the Department of Health and Kinesiology at least three weeks before the first day of the semester of intended enrollment.

Basis of Admission Decision

The decision regarding acceptance into a graduate degree program in the Department of Health and Kinesiology is based on:

1.   fulfillment of the general requirements of the University for admission as a graduate student;

2.   completion of adequate subject preparation for the requested master's degree program;

3.   appropriateness of the requested master's degree program in relation to the student's academic and professional goals;

4.   GPA in the last 60 hours of undergraduate courses or all upper-division undergraduate courses, and GPA in completed graduate courses;

5.   scores on the General Test of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE scores are not required for applicants with earned graduate or selected professional degrees from accredited programs; exemptions from GRE score requirements are based on earned professional degrees and are considered on an individual basis);

6.   proficiency in use of the English language;

7.   favorable recommendations by the designated professional references; and

8.   other evidence that the applicant may submit related to ability to succeed in the requested master's degree program

The Department assumes that every applicant is proficient with use of the Internet and standard office computer software, including word processing and spread sheets.

Categories of Admission

The Department has three categories of admission to graduate degree programs consistent with those of the University: Full Graduate Admission, Conditional Admission, and Provisional Admission. (See the Graduate Admission Policies in the Graduate Policies and Programs section of the University Catalog for University requirements related to these categories.)

An applicant who is not granted full admission status may be admitted conditionally. A conditionally admitted student will be assigned specific requirements in terms of courses and performance, to include completing six to nine semester hours (12 semester hours for the exception noted below) of courses from a select group of graduate courses designated by the student’s academic advisor, with a grade of A or B in each of these courses. Ordinarily these will be courses taught by full-time faculty members of the Department of Health and Kinesiology. The status of the student who meets these requirements will change to full admission. The student who fails to meet these requirements must discontinue the specific graduate degree program. According to University policy, a student seeking a graduate degree may take no more than nine hours of graduate courses before being fully admitted to a graduate degree program. An exception to this nine-hour limit may be granted to a conditionally admitted student pursuing the M.S. Degree in Clinical Exercise Physiology; this allows the student to enroll in the 12 hours of credit normally required in the first semester of the Clinical Exercise Physiology Program.

A student who apparently will meet Department requirements for full or conditional admission, but does not meet University requirements, may be admitted provisionally. A provisionally admitted student will be subject to the same restrictions as a conditionally admitted student in terms of courses that may be taken and grades that must be earned for the first six to nine hours of credit, as well as subject to the University limit of nine hours of credit before being fully admitted (with the same exception of admission to the M.S. Degree in Clinical Exercise Physiology noted above). When the reason for a student’s provisional admission status has been removed, the student’s status will be changed to full or conditional admission. Provisional admission may not extend beyond one semester.

With the exception related to the Clinical Exercise Physiology Program noted above, if a student completes more than nine hours before being admitted to a graduate degree program in the Department of Health and Kinesiology, no more than nine of those hours may be counted toward degree requirements.
