Research Interests :

  • Dr. Arce-Esquivel’s research agenda is aimed to fully understand the main cardiovascular effects of exercise
    • The role of exercise training programs on vascular function and explored the link between measures of vascular function and physical function.
    • Determine the mechanisms that mediate the beneficial effects of physical activity to reverse the detrimental changes associated with disease

Teaching Philosophy:

My teaching philosophy centers on providing the best possible environment for students to learn science. I realize all students differ in how they learn, and the knowledge they bring with them to my classroom also varies. In the classroom, I emphasize active learning and understanding of concepts applied to a variety of problems through the use of case studies, group projects, independent laboratory research projects, and in-class problem solving.

I often pose critical thinking questions to the class and have students reflect on these questions for a few minutes. Then my students discuss their answers with their classmates, and later share their conclusions with the entire class. This approach actively encourages student participation compared to passive learning activities, such as taking notes out of a textbook. I also try to make science and scientific concepts meaningful for the students who are non-majors. Connecting the lectures with real world examples is one way to achieve this objective. To this end, I frequently ask students to bring to class a recent journal article related to the topics addressed in class, and have students present a brief synopsis to the class.
