On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Department of Health and Kinesiology at The University of Texas at Tyler, I welcome you to our Web site and to our Department.
This is a very exciting time at UT Tyler and in the Department of Health and Kinesiology. The University and the Department are experiencing substantial growth in terms of number of students, and we anticipate continued growth in both number of students and expanded academic programs. Since the founding of The University of Texas at Tyler (as Texas State College) in 1971, the Department has been known for excellence in academic programs and scholarly activities. The Department’s mission is to “responsibly facilitate learning in the areas of health and kinesiology, emphasizing competence, ethics, and altruism.” We take this mission seriously, striving to provide students with rigorous and relevant curricula; excellent teaching, laboratory, and clinical and field experiences; and personal, caring attention. If our mission is consistent with your educational and professional goals, we welcome the opportunity to work with you.
Health care is a huge and growing part of the American economy, and exercise and sport are major factors in our culture. In addition, promotion of wellness and prevention of disease and disability are gaining more and more attention by those concerned about the well-being of our citizens and the vitality of our economy. Therefore, opportunities for study and employment in the fields of health and kinesiology are many and varied. Graduates of our programs have moved directly into careers in various areas of health care, teaching, coaching, business and research. Still others have used our programs as preparation for further education in graduate or professional schools. Our graduates include physicians, physical therapists, researchers, college and university faculty members, teachers, coaches, athletic trainers, public health workers, pharmaceutical representatives, and others. In short, the possibilities are almost endless!
I hope our Web site provides helpful information and helps you get to know us better. If you would like additional information, please feel free to contact me or others in the Department. We look forward to communicating with you, seeing you on campus (virtually, if not if person), and working with you as you pursue goals and dreams.
