Trade and Industrial Education Teacher Certification

 

Step 2 -   Fulfill the Requirements of Your Career Development Plan
You must complete all of the requirements stated on the Certification Plan and fulfill one of the three options listed below. 

Option
I

 
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution;

  • Have three years of full-time wage earning experience within the past eight years in one or more approved occupations for which instruction is offered.  Up to 18 months of the wage-earning experience can be through a formal documented internship.

Option
I
I

 
  • Hold an associates’ degree from an accredited institution;

  • Have three years of full-time wage earning experience within the past eight years in one or more approved occupations for which instruction is offered.

Option III

 
  • Hold a high school diploma or the equivalent;

  • Have five years of full-time wage earning experience within the past eight years in one or more approved occupations for which instruction of offered.

All Options Require:

 
  • A current licensure, certification, or registration by a state or nationally recognized accrediting agency as a professional practitioner in one or more approved occupations for which instruction is offered.  Licensure, certification, or registration by a nationally recognized accrediting agency must be based on a recognized test or measurement.  Please submit a copy of your certification, licensure, or registration along with your Statement of Qualification (SOQ).  If the licensure, certification, or registration is not based on a recognized test or measurement, then passing of the appropriate National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI) assessment is required.  (Contact the School of HRD and Technology, at The University of Texas at Tyler at 903-566-7310)  

  • Prospective Trade and Industrial Education teachers shall submit a Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) detailing prior experience and skill area preparation to the certification officer at THE UNIVERSTIY OF TEXAS AT TYLER.  The certification officer shall review the applicant’s Statement of Qualifications to determine whether the applicant meets the appropriate approval criteria.  

  • Twelve (12) months of wage-earning experience consisting of at least 40 hours per week shall equal one year of full-time experience.  Wage-earning experience consisting of less than 40, but at least 20, hours per week shall be calculated at a 50% rate in determining years of full-time experience.  Wage-earning experience consisting of less than 20 hours per week shall not be considered acceptable in determining full-time experience. 

  • Attend the a New Teacher Workshop as offered annually at the Trade and Industrial Education Professional Development Conference.

  • Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities examination for T&I Education.

Internship in Technology

HRD 4311:  Instructional Delivery
Study of principles and methods of classroom and laboratory control, teaching, guidance, planning, evaluation, and integrating career oriented programs into education goals. Concurrent enrollment in HRD 4312 may be required. Course fee required.
 

HRD 4332: 
Instructional Design and Assessment
Fundamentals of course construction including job and trade analysis to determine the skills and related technical competencies needed in the development of a course of study. Course fee required.
 

HRD 4313: 
Management of the Instructional Environment
Techniques of organizing and managing the technology laboratory. Includes materials handling, the ordering of supplies, record keeping, inventory control, and laboratory plans. Course fee required.
 

HRD 4331:  Work Force Development
Concentrates on goals and objectives of career and technology education programs described in the state plan for vocational education, allocation of funds, personnel qualification, and program and facility standards. Course fee required.
 

HRD 4333: Human Relations
Study of the relationships of the industrial teacher to the administration, students, other teachers, the school, and community, and to other educational institutions and agencies. Course fee required.
 

HRD 4370 & 4371: Undergraduate Internship Program
An eight to 16 week program providing for a teaching experience in an off-campus environment. Prerequisite:
Consent of department chair. Course fee required.
