Intensive English Language Institute (IELI)

The IELI Program assists non-native English speakers to improve their academic English language and American culture skills as well as prepare for university matriculation and success in a global environment. Students can attend classes spanning from one (1) week to an entire semester (16 weeks).  

Organized into two eight-week sessions each semester, and one eight-week summer session, the program includes Listening and Speaking; Grammar and Idioms; Reading and Discussion; Writing, Editing and Research; as well as strands focusing on entry level American Classroom Culture and advanced level University Preparation, including training in IELI Levels 5-7 for the Texas Success Initiative (TSI), a state-legislated program designed to improve student success in college.

The IELI offers optional seminars including test preparation seminars for the TOEFL IBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language, Internet Based Test) and IELTS (International English Language Testing System) designed for students who wish to become familiar with the testing formats and develop English skills and test-taking strategies, as well as general English language development workshops which aim to fine-tune students’ skills in all domains. In addition, specialty seminars such as English for Business, English for Engineering, English for Health Care Professionals, and English for Tourism and Hospitality are available.

English waivers for admission to The University of Texas at Tyler undergraduate and graduate programs are available for successful completion of the IELI Program. Details are listed below.

IELI Students

English Fluency

The IELI is designed to help prepare international students to successfully meet the university requirements pertaining to English proficiency and matriculation into the university. Admission to UT Tyler requires a minimum Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 79, International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.5 and 6 or greater in all sub-sections, or Pearson Test of English (PTE) score of 53.

English Waiver for Undergraduate Students

TOEFL, PTE AND IELTS scores will be waived for students who complete Level 6 of IELI with no grade lower than an A or those who complete Level 7 with no grade lower than B.

English Waiver for Graduate Students

TOEFL, PTE AND IELTS scores will be waived for students who complete Level 7 of the IELI, however, the waiver depends on grades received in the IELI Program, as well as specific English proficiency requirements in each college at UT Tyler.   

For specific admissions criteria for UT Tyler, please refer to the International Undergraduate and Graduate Student admissions descriptions in the UT Tyler Academic Catalog. NOTE: The Educational Testing Service (ETS) code for TOEFL for The University of Texas at Tyler is 6850.

Programs

  • Community English Class

    The IELI offers a Conversation Corner which is free and open to community members as well as IELI and UT Tyler students for English language skills development. Conversation Corner is offered every fall and spring semester on Thursday afternoons from 3:30 - 5 p.m.

    It will start back up on September 7, 2017.

  • IELI Special Programs

    Workshops

    The IELI offers special programs and workshops available for UT Tyler students, community members and IELI students. 

    These one-week workshops are designed to improve your English skills and are open to visitors on B1/B2 tourist visa.

    IELI Short-Term Summer Programs

    The IELI is offering two four-week programs during the summer. The “English Language for English Teachers” program is designed to enhance the students’ communicative competency and provide training and practice in the latest ELT methodologies. The program offers 21 hours of study each week for four weeks.

    The second program is “American Language and Culture” and offers Language development classes and explores American culture. Both programs offer students opportunities for cross-cultural exchanges and cultural exchanges in the Tyler area.

  • UT Tyler and the IELI

    The University of Texas at Tyler is accredited by The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS COC), the regional body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the southern states.  Both UT Tyler and our IELI are approved by the U.S. Department of State Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). In addition, our IELI is part of English USA, The American Association of Intensive English Programs, and also recognized by the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission (SACM).

    As part of the university, UT Tyler's Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) provides instructional programs critical to UT Tyler's mission, offering current and future international students, scholars and faculty with high-quality English language training and orientation programs. The IELI also offers opportunities for learning, collaboration and research in language acquisition in conjunction with UT Tyler's School of Education, as well as at UT Tyler's Innovation Academy, modeling cutting-edge learning for primary and middle school education.
