Main Menu Touch Panel Operation:

The Main Menu screen is the primary control screen. It is divided into four sections: Menus, Video Source, Camera Function Operation, and Volume Control.

Menus:

There are four separate menus discussed in this handbook. The Main menu was covered above. The Cam (Camera Settings) menu will be discussed next followed by the Set-Up menu and the Auto menu.

Video Source:

There are six video source selections that may be transmitted to the remote site locations. (Note: only one video source is transmitted at a time from each location during a conference. However, you may change any video source to send at any time during the conference.) When you select a video source, your selection is transmitted automatically to the remote site locations. (There is not a second step when making selections.)

Select the Instructor Camera button when you want the remote site locations to see the instructor lecturing if he or she is originating from your location.

  • The Instructor Camera is mounted in the back of the classroom facing the instructor. The camera is usually mounted near the TV monitor that the instructor views the remote site locations during class lecture and discussion.
  • The position of the instructor camera helps students at the remote site locations feel that the instructor is making eye contact with them regardless of the distance.

Select the Student Camera button when you want the remote site locations to see the students in the classroom.

  • The Student Camera is located in the front of the classroom facing the students. The camera is mounted near the TV monitor where students view the video source that the instructor is transmitting from his or her location (i.e., instructor camera, student camera, graphics displayed on the document camera, PowerPoint presentations displayed from the computer, class material presented on the white board, etc.).
  • The position of the student camera helps the instructor feel that the remote site students are making eye contact with him or her during class lecture and discussion.

Select the Doc Cam button when you would like to show graphics or objects on the document camera.

  • Controls for the document camera are not located on the touch panel. You must make adjustments (i.e., zoom in, zoom out, etc.) by using the buttons provided on the document camera.

Select the PC button when you would like students to see your computer presentation displayed in the classroom and at the remote site locations.

When you select the VCR button, a pop-up menu (below) will be displayed. The pop-up menu allows you to operate the VCR from the touch panel.

  • You operate the VCR the same as you would your VCR at home. All that you need to do manually on the VCR is insert or eject the VCR tape. You do not need to make any adjustments on the VCR to play a video.
  • After you are finished using the VCR Menu, touch the Exit button to return to the Main Menu.

Select the Slide Proj button when using a video ready slide projector.

  • (Note: ITV classrooms that have video ready slide projectors installed are: SCI 213, ADM 127, and a "mobile" slide projector currently in BUS 106. Palestine and Longview do not have video ready slide projectors installed.)

The NEAR and FAR buttons allow you to select what the students in your ITV classroom are viewing in the front of the classroom. (Note: it does not change what the students at the remote site locations are viewing.)

  • If you select the NEAR button, students at your location will see the video source you are sending to the remote site locations on the front TV monitor(s) in the classroom such as the PC, VCR, document camera, etc.
  • If you select the FAR button, students at your location will see the remote site students (the remote site location that spoke last) on the front TV monitor(s). This option is very useful when you want students at various locations to engage in class discussions. Students will be able to interact with one another and be able to see one another.

Camera Function:

The first section of the Main Menu controls the pan, tilt, and zoom functions of the Instructor Camera and Student Camera. Notice that the Time and Date are also visible on the main menu for your convenience. (Presets will be covered in the Camera Settings Menu section of this handbook.)

Examples of pan, tilt, and zoom function operation:

  • If you select the Instructor Camera: the pan, tilt, and zoom function will move only the instructor camera.
  • If you select the Student Camera: the pan, tilt, and zoom function will move only the student camera. (Note: there is not a separate menu for the pan, tilt, and zoom function operation when you select the instructor camera or the student camera. The camera operation section controls the camera source you have selected.)

Volume Control:

The (receive) audio in the classroom is adjusted by using the Volume Control. You can raise or lower the volume that is received from the remote site locations as well as the VCR (room) volume and computer (room) volume. "Room" volume is specific here. Raising or lowering the audio in your classroom does not raise or lower the audio to the remote sites. The audio sent from your classroom is set and remote site locations make volume adjustments in their classrooms.

  • Normal audio in the classroom is usually set (balanced) in the middle. (Notice the red bar above.) If you have difficulty hearing the remote site audio, you may raise the volume by making slight adjustments.
  • If you need to mute the instructor microphone (podium or lapel microphone) in the classroom, push the Instruct Mic Mute button. The button will change to yellow with a red lettering when the button is activated.
  • To deactivate the mute button, simply push the button again and it will deactivate.

Camera Settings Menu:

By selecting the Cam button in the Menus section, you will see the Main Menu switch to the Camera Settings Menu on the screen:

Notice that the Main Menu and Camera Settings Menu are very similar. However, there are two features that have been added.

Pan/Tilt Speed:

The Pan/Tilt Speed allows you to change the speed of the camera when it moves from side-to-side and up and down.

  • 1 represents normal (slow) camera speed operation. If you would like the camera to pan/tilt faster, select 2, 3, or 4. Note: if you select 4, the camera will pan and tilt very fast!
  • If you notice the instructor camera or student camera operating faster than you would like during your class, select the Cam menu and select 1 for normal camera pan/tilt operation.

Presets:

You can also set camera Presets in the Camera Settings menu. There are four presets you may set for the instructor camera or for the student camera. Note: the presets for the student camera do not override the auto focus software that zooms in automatically when a student activates their microphone. (If you need to have a group shot of students in a group for debates or group discussions, please refer to the Auto menu section later in this handbook.)

To set presets for the instructor camera:

  • Select the Instructor Camera button. Focus in on an area you would like to save as a preset. Select the SAVE button and select the number 1, 2, 3 or 4 button. For example, if you would like to save an area on preset 1: select the SAVE button and then the 1 button. (Do the same for each preset you would like to save.)
  • To change a preset: do the same as you did above to override the previous selection.

When you return to the Main menu, you will have the stored presets to use during the lecture.

Set-Up Menu:

The Set-Up Menu in BUS 104 has five sections: Set-up, Video Source, Power, Volume Control, and Menus. If you are using the Set-Up menu, you can change the video source in the classroom, you can turn the overhead projector on or off and display the computer, you can adjust the volume, and you can change your menu selection.

Set-Up:

In the Set-Up Menu, you are able to alert the ITV staff of problems you may be experiencing in the classroom. You may contact the ITV Hotline by dialing x7138 or you may push the Help button. When you activate the Help button, an alert is sent to the System Operations where ITV personnel are on hand to assist you. They will hear an alarm notifying them of problems in your classroom. If you are using a classroom assistant, they are instructed to contact the ITV Hotline immediately instead of using the Help button. However, many of you conduct your own classes and this is a handy tool when you need immediate assistance.

Change Date/Time:

We also have the capability to change the Date/Time when needed. However, the date/time display on the touch panel does NOT effect the time in which your class begins or ends. The date and time is for your convenience. (Class connection/disconnect times are scheduled through the System Operations multi-point connection unit [MCU] located in the Library room 118. For questions regarding scheduling of ITV classes, please contact the ITV Hotline at x7138.)

Change Video Source / Select Overhead Projector:

You may select the video source you wish to display from the Set-Up menu. You may also turn on the overhead projector located in BUS 104 by touching the Projector ON/OFF button once (it takes a few seconds for the projector to begin projecting). To turn the overhead projector off, simply touch the Projector ON/OFF button twice (it takes a few seconds for the projector to turn off). Once you have turned the projector on, you may push the Show Computer on Projector button. This will transmit the computer image to the overhead projector.

REMEMBER: Touch the Projector ON/OFF button once to turn ON, twice to turn OFF.

System Power:

The System ON / System OFF buttons turn the teaching console components on and off.PLEASE NOTE: Only the ITV staff use the System On and System Off buttons. These are used when powering the system up each day and are used when powering off the system after classes have ended. Please do not use this section of the Set-Up menu.

Auto Menu:

The Auto menu is used for setting the presets for the auto zoom software that is used with the student microphones. The ITV staff use the Auto menu when they need to make adjustments with the camera settings to the student microphones. However, there may be a time when you need to reset the student camera to its home position (a wide angle shot of the students in the classroom).

  • The Home Position button corrects the student camera position if it should happen to stay zoomed in on a student after they have closed their microphone. This does not occur on a regular basis, but the information is always good to know.

To change the home position of the student camera:

If the instructor would like the student camera to default to a different home position (one that is zeroed in on a group of students instead of a wide angle shot of the classroom), perform the following steps:

  • Select the Student Camera button and select the Auto menu.
  • Select the Home Position button. (This will be the default position of the student camera after a student speaks in the room.)
  • Pan/Tilt the student camera to the group shot you would like to transmit to the remote site locations.
  • Press the Save button then the Home Position button. This will be where the student camera defaults after a student speaks from their microphone.

Note: if you should have problems, contact the ITV Hotline at x7138 for assistance.
