UT Tyler
offers a wide range of courses at each Interactive Video
location giving students cost-saving convenience,
greater flexibility in scheduling their classes and
reduces travel expenses and commuting time to Tyler.
Panoramic
cameras, large TV monitors, projectors, and sensitive sound equipment allow
complete communication between each location.
Students
are able to see and communicate with faculty that teach
from the various UT Tyler campuses. Students are also
able to ask questions and participate in classroom
discussions. At the same time, the faculty member is able to see and communicate with students in
the remote locations.
The
University of Texas at Tyler ITV Network is composed of
twenty-four interactive video classrooms. There are ten
interactive video classrooms on main campus, five
classrooms at The University of Texas at Tyler Palestine
Campus, eight classrooms at The Longview University
Center, and one at Mexia State School.
The
University of Texas at Tyler is equipped with a System
Operations that monitors and schedules interactive video
(ITV) courses that are taught on the main UT Tyler
campus as well as from Palestine and Longview campuses. The System Operations monitors and
troubleshoots technical problems that may occur during
the transmission of ITV classes and is responsible for
technical support to the interactive video equipment.
Local telecommunication companies provide network
connection service for ITV classes and provide technical
support to network lines that are located outside the
institutions boundaries. A staff of full-time and
part-time personnel are on hand at all times during
classroom instruction to handle technical and administrative assistance when necessary for courses
offered through interactive video.
UT Tyler
works closely with the University of Texas System,
Office of Telecommunication Services (OTS), in Austin.
OTS serves as a gateway to receive meetings and training
programs offered through the University of Texas System.
They also serve as a telecommunications gateway for
interactive video courses offered from The University of Texas
at Houston toward a Doctoral Degree in Nursing and the Nurse Practitioner Program
offered from Texas Tech.
The
University of Texas at Tyler ITV Network is also a part
of the Northeast Texas NETNet consortium composed of
thirteen microwave videoconferencing systems. Through
NETnet, UT Tyler
delivers courses to Jacksonville College, Panola College
in Carthage, and Texas State Technical College in
Waco.
