MINOR IN ENGLISH OR TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (TESL)
TESL is taught as a minor at the University of Texas at Tyler. Most commonly it complements a B.A. in English or a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies (through the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Foundations).
The purpose of this program is twofold. First, the program aims to make students familiar with different issues pertaining to language: the structural elements of language and how language is used in society. Secondly, the program acquaints students with different theories of language acquisition and methods for teaching languages.
The minor in TESL requires the following 12 hours of ESL coursework:
Fall:
ENGL 3376: Contrastive Linguistics
ENGL 4378: Methodology of ESL
Spring:
ENGL 4376: The Nature of Language
ENGL 4377: Acquisition and Development of ESL
In addition, students must complete 6 more hours to be selected from the following:
Multi-cultural studies (selected in consultation with adviser)
Or Foreign language
Or Practicum in Teaching ESL (ENGL 4387 and/or 4687)
See description of courses on other side of handout.
Students pursuing ESL as a minor complementing a BA in English must register for at least 3 hours of teaching internship.
