UT Tyler Magazine - Spring 2013


David Anderson (B.B.A.) is the new director of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler's pre-awards office, which oversees efforts by UTHSCT scientists to obtain funding for research.

Anderson joined UTHSCT in 1993 and has been involved in administering grants since 1998.


Terry Morrow (B.S.) retired from the Tyler Police Department after 32 ½ years of service on Nov. 30, 2012.


Amelia N. Proctor (B.B.A), a certified public accountant, has been named division manager for TBT Financial Services, a division of Texas Bank and Trust Co.


James A. "Archie'' Whitfield (M.A.) (B.B.A. 1975) was inducted into the Hall of Fame by Kilgore College for his dedication and efforts to help the college on a continual basis.

Whitfield is director of communication and public relations for the Ana-Lab Corp. in Kilgore.


Gary Mooring (M.Ed.) was named superintendent of Tyler Independent School District after being chosen as the lone finalist for the position.

Mooring joined Tyler ISD in 2006 as deputy superintendent and later served as interim superintendent.

Christopher Sharkey (B.B.A.) established the Sharkey Law Office in Houston in 1994.


Suzanne Brians (M.S.) is with Tyler Counseling & Assessment Center LLP as a licensed professional counselor specializing in individual and family therapy. She treats children, teens and adults with ADHD, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety disorders and general life adjustment issues.

Carolyn B. Sowell (M.S.) (B.A. 1985) is with Tyler Counseling & Assessment Center LLP as a licensed professional counselor specializing in individual therapy with teens and adults. She also serves as general partner and CFO.


Mary Elizabeth Jackson (M.A.), vice president of Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics and president of the Trinity Mother Frances Foundation, was elected by the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce board of directors to serve as chairwoman for 2012-13.

Beverly Collins (M.Ed) is employed with Mentoring Minds in Tyler. She worked for Tyler Independent School District for 29 years, beginning in 1976 as a teacher at Austin Elementary School. She served Douglas Elementary School for 27 years, beginning in 1978.

Connie Moore (M.Ed) (M.A. 1983) has 30 years of experience in public education in the classroom and in administration. Moore taught first through seventh grades, special education and gifted/talented classes. She has extensive experience as an administrator, serving as a middle school assistant principal and elementary school principal.


John R. "Bob'' Garrett (M.B.A.) was one of three members appointed by Gov. Rick Perry to the Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents for terms to expire Jan. 31, 2019.

Garrett is president and CEO of Fair Oil Co. of Texas and Fair Management Co.


Ron L. Roberts (M.S.) is a licensed professional counselor specializing in individual therapy and assessment with adults, children and adolescents. He specializes in treating anxiety, behavioral disorders, ADHD, pervasive developmental disorders, depression, sexuality issues, stress management and parenting.

Roberts is a general partner and the clinical director of Tyler Counseling & Assessment Center LLP.

Steven R. Green (B.S.) was named municipal court judge for the city of Athens in May 2012. He is also an attorney and counselor at law at Head and Green.


William "Hudson'' White (M.B.A.) is president, CEO and director of Gladewater National Bank.

Sgt. Terry Morrow (B.S.) retired in November after more than 32 years with the Tyler Police Department. Morrow is former president of the Texas Association of Hostage Negotiators.


Lance Browning (B.B.A.) is one of five partners to form Income Solutions Wealth Management, a new financial services firm in Tyler.

Debbie Sadler (M.S.) (B.A.A.S. 1991), White Oak Community and Economic Development director, recently earned the certified economic development designation from the International Economic Development Council.


Financial advisers Vicki Sorrell (B.B.A.) and Anna Malone have joined to form Sorrell, Malone & Associates in the Merrill Lynch Tyler branch office.

Sorrell joined Merrill Lynch in 2008 and has worked in the financial services industry for more than 30 years.


Amanda Byers (B.S.I.S.) is employed with Mentoring Minds of Tyler. She began teaching in 1998 and focused her career at the middle school level. She taught seventh- and eighth-grade math and Pre-AP Algebra I.


Amanda Atwood (Britton) (B.B.A.) is an accounting manager with Potter Minton.

Adam T. Pecina (M.Ed) is an athletic trainer with the Naval Academy Athletic Association.


Ramsey Starks (B.S.) joined the firm of Prothro, Wilhelmi and Co. in November 2006 after working for two years with a local firm.

Starks was born and raised in Tyler. He is married to the former Bethany Ray of Tyler. They have one daughter, Darby Grace, and are expecting their second daughter, Claire Joy, in April.


Kelvin Woodfin (B.G.S.), broker/owner of Tyler Lending Group, has been involved in the mortgage lending industry for seven years.

Sue Saxenmeyer (M.B.A.) serves on the Executive Committee of the Tyler Women's Fund.


Rose Ellis (B.B.A.) joined the firm of Prothro, Wilhelmi and Co. in March 2012. She participated in the Tyler Apprenticeship Program, Leadership Academy and Lean Sigma Green Belt Program among several other leadership and growth opportunities.

Ellis is married with two children.


Brittani Mathis Smith (B.S.) is a full-time conference planner and event manager for the world renowned South by Southwest (SXSW) Conferences & Festivals, which offers a convergence of music, film, interactive technologies and education.

Karen Tutt (M.Ed.) (B.S. 1998) is an avid supporter and volunteer for Longview World of Wonders, North Pole Express. Tutt is employed with The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston as an outreach mentor to pre-kindergarten teachers in the Region 7 service area.

She and her husband, Tom, have been married 12 years and are the parents of Jonathan, 9, and Andrew, 7.


Dr. Travis Heaton (B.S.) practices at Kinsey Drive Dental and volunteers as a dentist at Bethesda Health Clinic of Tyler. His wife, UT Tyler graduate Lindsey Rice Heaton (B.B.A. 2007) is an academic adviser at Tyler Junior College

Russell Patterson (M.Ed) is a member of the Tyler Independent School District Foundation board of directors and co-chaired the 19th Annual Gil Hitt Memorial Golf Tournament. He is the owner of Patterson Commercial Property Group.

Patterson and his wife, Diana, have been married for seven years and are the parents of 2-year-old identical twin girls, Katherine Ann and Reagan Elizabeth.


David K. Godwin (B.B.A.) joined the firm of Prothro, Wilhelmi, and Co. in November of 2007. His areas of practice include tax preparation, consulting services and financial statement audits for governmental entities and non-profit organizations.

His college sweetheart and wife Aigul is originally from Kazakhstan, where they frequently travel to visit relatives. They have one daughter, Eva Gwenn.


Robin Haynie (B.A.) and her husband are co-owners of Pinot's Palette, which recently opened in Tyler.


Chris Curtis (B.S.) recently joined the sports team of KCBD News Channel 11 in Lubbock.

Curtis interned with the sports team at KYTX CBS 19 in Tyler and called soccer and basketball games for UT Tyler Radio.


Joni Bryant (M.A.) is with Tyler Counseling & Assessment Center LLP as a licensed professional counselor specializing in individual therapy with children, teens and adults.

Erik Schaal (B.A.) is Pleasanton regional operations manager for RCW Energy Services.

Martina "Cristy" C. McDowell (B.B.A.) joined the firm of Prothro, Wilhelmi and Co. in May 2010 after graduating from UT Tyler.

McDowell and her husband, Michael, are members of Driven Life Church in Canton.

Cindy Klein (B.B.A.) is chief strategic officer for Mentoring Minds of Tyler. She is responsible for creating, communicating, executing and sustaining an array of strategic initiatives. Klein recently served as director of Leadership Tyler and is a strategic planning consultant.


Ebubekir Orsun (M.Ed.) has started his educational doctorate in the educational leadership program at Lamar University. He is planning to complete his dissertation and doctorate by May 2015.

Orsun is assistant principal for Harmony School of Advancement.

Cassandra "Cassie'' Bartley (B.B.A.) is a corporate trainer for Claims Administrative Services, one of the largest Worker's Compensation Claims Administration companies for Texas school districts.

Chase D. Patterson (B.S.) and Christian C. Keitt were married in March. Keitt will graduate from UT Tyler in May 2013 with bachelor of arts degree.

Stephanie Troyer (M.B.A.) (B.B.A. 2011) joined the firm of Prothro, Wilhelmi and Co. in February 2012. Her areas of practice include tax preparation, auditing and QuickBooks reporting.

She was married in January of 2010 to her best friend, Jereme.

Amy D. Lynch (B.B.A.) joined the firm of Prothro, Wilhelmi and Co. August 1, 2012. Her work experience includes income tax return preparation and bookkeeping. She will complete the MBA program at UT Tyler this spring.

Graig Durant (B.F.A.) was hired as a graphic designer and assistant to the communications services manager at Victoria Public Library. Prior to his new position, Durant was assistant manager of FYE Music Store.


First Class Petty Officer Darrell Deitenbeck (M.B.A.) (B.B.A. 2010) was selected as an ambassador of the U.S. Armed Forces representing the U.S. Navy at the 57th inaugural ceremony. Ambassadors served as ushers on the west lawn of the capitol during the inauguration, escorting VIPs to their seats. More than 400 sailors applied to be ambassadors for the ceremony and only 50 were selected.

Deitenbeck also was sworn in for another six years of service in the U.S. Navy Reserves by Rear Adm. Robin R. Braun, Navy Reserve chief.

Ricardo Jose Alvarez Uzcategui (M.B.A.) is a senior planner/buyer for Punteral Group in Venezuela.

Ciera Ward(B.S.) is pursuing post-baccalaureate studies at UT Tyler, after earning a bachelor's degree in chemistry with a minor in biology. She is continuing her research in the UT Tyler Department of Chemistry and has been accepted to medical school in San Antonio.


Kerrie Anne "Ambort'' Clark(B.B.A. 2009, M.B.A 2011) and Justin Clark(B.B.A. 2010, M.B.A. 2012) announced the birth of their first child. Aislyn Ryan Clark arrived Nov. 2, 2012.


UT Tyler
