Instrumental Ensembles

Scholarships: Any UT Tyler student regardless of major who wishes to participate in a choral or instrumental ensemble may qualify to receive a Talent Scholarship. Students must apply for an award during the summer prior to intended enrollment. Awards are renewable.
Wind Ensemble

Wind Ensemble is the University's leading instrumental performance group, conducted by Dr. Jeffrey Emge. The group consists of UT Tyler music and non-music majors. Literature includes works in all styles: transcriptions, traditional band works, recent works commissioned for the contemporary wind ensemble, and works featuring outstanding student or professional soloists. Two performances are scheduled each semester. Membership is by audition only.

Tyler Community Band

Directed by Dr. Jeffrey Emge, the Tyler Community Band involves university and junior college students as well as advanced players from Tyler and surrounding communities. Literature is selected from traditional band compositions and transcriptions as well as modern works. Entrance is through director conference. The band rehearses Tuesday evenings and performs twice each semester. It also offers an annual "Celebrate America" concert in conjunction with Independence Day festivities.

Jazz Patriots

Directed by Dr. John Webb, the Jazz Patriots are an instrumental combo with vocal soloist(s), performing a variety of jazz repertoire.  Open to all university students by audition.

Chamber Ensembles

The School of Performing Arts offers various instrumental chamber ensembles. Coached by applied music faculty members, these groups offer students the opportunity to enhance their individual playing skills, ensemble skills, and confidence. Instrumental music education majors are exposed to chamber literature suitable for use in the secondary schools.
