'WOW' Activities To Introduce
Freshmen To UT Tyler

About 200 to 225 incoming freshmen are expected to take
part in Weekend of Welcome 2001 orientation activities this
summer at The University of Texas at Tyler, said Mark W.
Matthews, student development specialist and director of
freshman orientation.
WOW sessions are scheduled for June 22-23 and July 27-28.
Each two-day session is designed to introduce students -
and their parents - to UT Tyler academic programs and the
campus environment.
Students will register for school, meet with academic advisers,
deans and faculty members and hear presentations on topics
such as "What to Expect - Student Perspective'' and
"What to Expect - Faculty/Staff Perspective.'' Social
activities, designed to encourage student interaction, will
include a welcome dinner banquet, scavenger hunt, pool party
and overnight stay at the University Pines Apartments.
Orientation participants also will be assigned to Peer Mentors
according to their majors. Peer Mentors, students trained
and certified to help freshmen adapt to campus life, "will
guide orientation participants around campus, answer questions
they may have and help them to become familiarized with
UT Tyler,'' said Matthews. The role of the Peer Mentor only
begins at freshman orientation, he added. Peer Mentors continue
to be of assistance to freshmen throughout the year.
Freshman orientation is also a time for parents to become
familiar with the university and receive information about
issues that are important to them. WOW activities planned
for parents of incoming freshmen include informative presentations
about topics such as the UT Tyler academic experience, money
matters, campus safety and what to expect the first year.
They also will be given tours of the campus and University
Pines Apartments.
Another WOW event for incoming freshmen and their parents
is the Information Fair. Representatives from academic departments,
student organizations and support services will be available
to provide information about academics, campus activities
and student services.
