UT Tyler to Induct 21 Into Business Honor Society

The University of Texas at Tyler College of Business and Technology inducted 21 undergraduate and graduate students into the Beta Gamma Sigma national business honor society Sunday at the Braithwaite Recital Hall.

Tyler businessmen Bill Hartley and Vernon E. Faulconer were inducted as honorary members for their contributions to the business community.

Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest national recognition a student can receive in an undergraduate or master's program in business or management accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business, according to Dr. Cheryl Prachyl, president of the UT Tyler Beta Gamma Sigma chapter. Library Plans Read-In for East Texas Fourth-Graders

Muntz Library, along with TLC through Literacy, will sponsor an International Read-In for fourth-graders from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, May 16, in Room 401.

More than 350 East Texas students are expected to attend the Read-In, an annual event celebrating the integration of language arts and telecommunications in education. They will join young readers from all over the world to interview children's authors in a safe, fully moderated online experience. More>>>

Patriots Beat Texas Wesleyan

UT Tyler men beat Texas Wesleyan 6-1 in a dual tennis match April 18. The UT Tyler girls won all of their matches as well, said Kenneth Olivier, head tennis coach.

"Both teams played well, and a few of the matches were close,'' Oliver said. "Luckily we were stronger than TW at #2 and #3 doubles, got off to a good start and kept the momentum going.'' Results>>>

UT Tyler Engineering Majors to Make High School Presentations

Students from The University of Texas at Tyler will visit Winona High School Thursday, May 2, to make presentations about the field of engineering, Dr. Troy Henson, dean of the UT Tyler College of Engineering and Computer Science, announced.

The event, designed to inspire secondary school students to take courses that lead to high technology professions, will begin at 11 a.m. Presentations will be made to senior as well as junior high school math and science students. More>>>

Chemistry Majors Present 'Magic Show' at Brownsboro School

Members of the UT Tyler Student Affiliate Chapter of the American Chemical Society presented a "Chemical Magic Show'' to the eighth-grade honors science class at Brownsboro Junior High School April 19. More>>>

Young Authors to be Honored at UT Tyler

An awards ceremony for the 18th annual Young Authors' Contest is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, at The University of Texas at Tyler, Dr. Nancy Horton, UT Tyler assistant professor of reading and contest coordinator, announced.

The ceremony will be held in Room 118 at the University Center. In the contest sponsored by the Reading Division of UT Tyler's Department of Special Services, first- through fifth-graders at Tyler-area public and private schools were invited to submit entries in poetry, essay, narration and creative writing categories. UT Tyler undergraduate reading students judged the entries based on originality of ideas, organization and continuity of thought, writing mechanics and development of topic. More>>>

In the Spotlight

An article by Melinda Hermanns, senior lecturer in nursing, has been accepted for publication. "Animal-Assisted Therapy: Physiological and Psychological Benefits'' will be the featured article in an upcoming issue of the American Journal of Nursing.

Hermanns also developed an online power point presentation for the Primary Health Care Providers to obtain continuing education. The presentation is titled "A Review of Psychiatric Disorders and the Medications for Primary Care Providers.''

Construction Updates

Health and Kinesiology Physical Education Building - No update.

College of Nursing and Health Sciences Building - Bids have been received and are being reviewed.

Longview University Center parking lot - Request for proposal responses have been received and are under evaluation for construction of an 85-space, lighted parking lot.

Longview University Center monument signs - An agreement has been executed with an architect. Construction bid speculations are being prepared.
