UT
Tyler to Sponsor Major/Minor Expo
The University
of Texas at Tyler Office of Student Services will sponsor
a Major/Minor Expo from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 9,
at the University Center, Krista Richardson, coordinator of
career services, has announced.
Currently
enrolled students will have an opportunity to meet with representatives
from academic departments in a central location to discuss
courses of study and ultimately declare a major or minor.

at the Wheel' to Headline UT Tyler Texas Shootout Barbecue

Nine time
Grammy-award winning artists Asleep at the Wheel will be the
featured entertainment at The University of Texas at Tyler's
2002 Texas "Shootout" Barbecue and Auction, Merle
Mabry, UT Tyler Ambassadors project chairman, has announced.
The annual
event will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 18 on the UT Tyler
campus. Linda Myers and Bonnie Barbarisi are co-chairs of

Astronaut to Speak at UT Tyler Engineering Banquet
NASA
astronaut James F. Reilly will be the featured speaker at
The University of Texas at Tyler 3rd Annual Engineering Students
Association banquet, Dr. Troy Henson, dean of the College
of Engineering and Computer Science, has announced.
The banquet
will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 11 in the UT Tyler Robert
R. Muntz Library, room 401.
Tickets
are available through April 9 and are $5 for all students
and $10 for non-students. Call Edith Harris on 566-7040 to

Tyler's Student Newspaper Staff Wins Contest Awards
Staff
members of The University of Texas at Tyler student newspaper,
The Patriot, won awards at the Texas Intercollegiate Press
Association Annual Conference in Fort Worth March 28-30.
Sophomore
Robert Boggs placed first in copy editing during a live contest
that, in most cases, challenged participants to complete an
assignment in one hour. Senior Melissa Tresner placed second
in headline writing as well as in print news writing in the
live contest. All universities and colleges competed in one

Tennis Team Beats Le Tourneau
The UT
Tyler men's tennis team scored a 7-0 win and the women's team
won three matches during the Patriots' home opener against
Le Tourneau University March 28.

Tyler Takes Part in Judging Regional Science Fair
Members
of the UT Tyler community served as judges in the East Texas
Regional Science Fair March 28 at Kilgore College.
Faculty
and staff members serving as judges were: Lesa Beverly, assistant
professor of mathematics; Neil Gray, assistant professor of
chemistry; Ron Gutberlet, assistant professor of biology;
Ladona Nall, senior laboratory technician (chemistry); Darrell
Pogue, assistant professor of biology; Nathan Smith, assistant
professor of mathematics; Brian Taylor, assistant professor
of chemistry; Sam Weaver, senior lecturer of physics; and
Ben Wehrung, assistant professor of mathematics.

Tyler to Honor High School Students for Academic Achievement
As Texas
academic standards become more rigorous for public schools,
Texas students are rising to the challenge.
The eighth
annual Texas Celebrations of Educational Excellence, sponsored
by the State Board of Education, will honor more than 14,000
high school students for meeting high academic standards April
8-12. Twenty-four Texas colleges and universities will host
about 6,800 of these students in ceremonies on their campuses.
Another 7,900 students will be honored later in local awards

and Kinesiology Physical Education Building - Concrete
piers poured during month of March. Construction projected
to be completed by late 2003.
College
of Nursing and Health Sciences Building - Bids have
been received and are being reviewed.
Longview
University Center parking lot - Bids were opened March
3 for construction of an 85-space, lighted parking lot.
Longview
University Center monument signs - There will be two
monument signs, one on each side of the entrance to the Longview
campus.
