In the Spotlight

Dr. Larry Carter, assistant professor of public administration, was guest speaker at a Longview Partnership governmental affairs breakfast July 26. Carter previewed key political races during the Longview event. He has written a book and several articles about public policy, and has studied upcoming elections.

Dr. Brenda Gilliam, associate professor of special education, and Dr. Amy Stevens Griffith, assistant professor of special education, have been re-elected to positions on the Texas Council for Exceptional Children.

Gilliam was re-elected president of the Texas Teacher Education Division and the Standards Committee. Griffith was re-elected to the TCEC board and is responsible for organizing student chapters in Texas.

Dr. Lindsay Wells, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, served on the National Science Foundation's Course Curriculum and Laboratory Improvement proposal review panel, in Washington, D.C., July 15-18.

The CCLI program of NSF's Division of Undergraduate Education funds post-secondary institutions to develop educational materials to enhance science, math, engineering and technology education around the country. Wells was invited to serve on the panel based on the successful completion of an $80,000 CCLI grant at UT Tyler last year.

Dr. Jeffrey Mountain and Dr. Donald Goddard, assistant professors of mechanical engineering, were co-principal investigators on the project, which involved integrating the product development process into the mechanical engineering curriculum using desktop manufacturing equipment.

Experience on the review panel provides insights into the proposal rating process, and can help investigators write effective NSF proposals. To discuss writing a proposal to the National Science Foundation, contact Wells at Ext. 5610

Dr. Mary Ellen Wright, assistant professor of theatre, was one of 25 theatre educators selected nationwide to attend the 2002 Association of Theatre in Higher Education Leadership Institute. The institute held July 23-24 in San Diego, Calif., provided a setting for the exploration of challenges and opportunities in higher education.

To be selected to attend, educators were required to demonstrate leadership potential in theatre administration through career achievement and a competitive application process.
