In
the Spotlight
Dr.
Larry Carter, assistant professor of public administration,
was guest speaker at a Longview Partnership governmental affairs
breakfast July 26. Carter previewed key political races during the
Longview event. He has written a book and several articles about
public policy, and has studied upcoming elections.
Dr. Brenda
Gilliam, associate professor of special education, and Dr. Amy
Stevens Griffith, assistant professor of special education,
have been re-elected to positions on the Texas Council for Exceptional
Children.
Gilliam was
re-elected president of the Texas Teacher Education Division and
the Standards Committee. Griffith was re-elected to the TCEC board
and is responsible for organizing student chapters in Texas.
Dr. Lindsay
Wells, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, served
on the National Science Foundation's Course Curriculum and Laboratory
Improvement proposal review panel, in Washington, D.C., July 15-18.
The CCLI program
of NSF's Division of Undergraduate Education funds post-secondary
institutions to develop educational materials to enhance science,
math, engineering and technology education around the country. Wells
was invited to serve on the panel based on the successful completion
of an $80,000 CCLI grant at UT Tyler last year.
Dr. Jeffrey
Mountain and Dr. Donald Goddard, assistant professors
of mechanical engineering, were co-principal investigators on the
project, which involved integrating the product development process
into the mechanical engineering curriculum using desktop manufacturing
equipment.
Experience on
the review panel provides insights into the proposal rating process,
and can help investigators write effective NSF proposals. To discuss

Dr. Mary
Ellen Wright, assistant professor of theatre, was one of 25
theatre educators selected nationwide to attend the 2002 Association
of Theatre in Higher Education Leadership Institute. The institute
held July 23-24 in San Diego, Calif., provided a setting for the
exploration of challenges and opportunities in higher education.
To be selected
to attend, educators were required to demonstrate leadership potential
in theatre administration through career achievement and a competitive
application process.
