Short Courses to be Offered This Fall
UT
Tyler will offer one-semester credit hour courses during the fall
semester, President Rodney H. Mabry announced.
The
courses can be taken for academic credit or for self-fulfillment.
They meet three hours per week for five weeks, with the exception
of the Opera Appreciation course available at the UT Tyler Longview
University Center, which will run seven weeks.
Topics
include sports, financial planning, computer security and physical
activity and nutrition for mature adults.
Courses
being held on the UT Tyler main campus are:
The
Law of Love (ENGL 4199) meets 6 - 8:50 p.m. Aug. 26 and Sept.
9, 16, 23 and 30. It examines similarities and connections between
the medieval writings about spiritual love and the contemporary
view of love described in The Art of Love by Erich Fromm. Instructor
will be Dr. David Strong.
It's
Only a Game: Why We Love Our Sports (HIST 4199) meets 6 - 8:50
p.m. Aug. 26 and Sept. 9, 16, 23 and 30. It explores why Americans
love sports, how sports reflect or mirror other changes in society
and how national crises impact sport. Instructor will be Dr. Dallas
Cothrum.
Dollars
and Sense (FINA 4199) meets 6 - 8:50 p.m. Aug. 27 and Sept.
3, 10, 17 and 24. The course covers the financial planning process,
including insurance, investments, real estate, retirement and estate
planning.
Computer
Security and Cryptography (COSC 4199) meets 6 - 8:50 p.m. Aug.
28 and Sept. 4, 11, 18 and 25. This topic presents modern cryptographic
techniques including the highest levels of security for data information,
as well as fundamentals of secret communication by describing and
illustrating the traditional cryptographic techniques designed before
the computer age.
Leading Quietly: A Look at Leadership Qualities that Endure (POLS
4199) meets 6 - 8:50 p.m. Aug. 29 and Sept. 5, 12, 19 and 26.
It explores how successful leaders have quietly and patiently made
their workplace, communities and the world a better place. The leadership
qualities and characteristics of such leaders as Eleanor Roosevelt,
Nelson Mandela and Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton will be
examined.
The
Role of Physical Activity and Nutrition in Preventing Disease in
Mature Adults (PYED 4199) meets 8 - 10:50 a.m. Aug. 24, 31 and
Sept. 7, 14 and 21. This course will assess health habits related
to cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and weight management. Students
will be shown how to calculate the amount of physical activity needed
in patterns of daily living to lower the risk of disease.
The
course includes a free spine only DEXA bone density test and blood
pressure checks.
Opera
Appreciation (MUSI 4199) will be held at the UT Tyler Longview
University Center 6 - 8 p.m. Sept. 10 through Oct. 29. A basic survey
of the literature of opera, its history and performance, this course
includes familiarization with historic and contemporary singers
through audio and video recordings.
The
fee is $92 per student for each course.
Registration
will be Aug. 21 in UC 118 for courses offered on the main campus
and LUC 210 for the course at the UT Tyler Longview University Center.
An
informal reception will be held at each site where students can
meet the instructors and learn more about the courses.
