Meadows Gallery to Feature Works by
Jim Pace
"Prayer
Flags,'' recent works by James Robert Pace, began Aug. 19 and continues
through Oct. 1 at The Meadows Gallery.
The exhibition
is presented by the gallery and the UT Tyler art program.
Pace is a professor
of art at UT Tyler, where he has taught since 1985. He holds master
of fine arts degree from Arizona State University and a bachelor
of fine arts from the University of Oklahoma.
His recent works
combine alternative photography with painting, printmaking and collage.
These works often deal with sacrifice, a search for understanding
and how political decisions affect our daily lives. His images of
international terrorists become metaphors for death itself. These
works have a sense of nationalistic pronouncement looking much like
flags, Native American blankets, Roman banners and disposable political
posters.
Pace's recent
exhibitions include a solo exhibition at the Longview Museum of
Fine Art; a print portfolio at Flat Bed Press; exhibitions at the
Parkside National in Wisconsin; America's 2000 at the Northwest
Art Center; 15th National Printmaking Exhibition at the Labland
Gallery in Los Angeles; The Biennial in New Cannan, Conn.; Song
of Images in New Delhi, India.
Other recent
exhibitions include invitationals at Baylor University, Mesa University,
Arizona State University, Auburn University, Florida State University,
The Museum of East Texas, Tyler Museum of Art, The University of
Oklahoma and the Dallas Museum of Art. His work is in numerous collections
including the Fogg Museum at Harvard University, Grunwald Center
for the Graphic Arts, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Nelson Atkins
Museum of Art, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and several
others.
Pace was appointed
to the Oge' Professorship in Visual Art in 1999 and the White Fellowship
for Excellence in Teaching in 1998. He received the Chancellor's
Council Teaching Award in 1996.
He
has received numerous awards for his paintings, drawings and prints
at nationally competitive exhibitions. He was awarded a National
Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, two University Research Grants
and has participated in the Tamarind Printmaking Program.
Pace regularly
lectures at universities and museums as well as international conferences
on topics ranging from contemporary aesthetics to the conceptual
development of his personal works. He serves as a visiting artist
to art centers, universities and private art institutes.
