PERFORMING ARTS SERIES
Comedienne, actress, dancer and best-selling author Suzanne Somers will be the season opener for the Performing Arts Series.

Somers will perform her Las Vegas-style show Saturday, Sept. 21, in the Cowan Center's Vaughn Auditorium. The performance is sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. A.W. "Dub" Riter Jr.

Other performances this season include La Boheme, Oct. 8, sponsored by The Vaughn Foundation; Gregory Hines, Nov. 15, sponsored by Norma and Jim Cotton; Big Band Dance Party starring The Jivin' Lindy Hoppers, Jan. 23, 2003, sponsored by UT Tyler President and Mrs. Rodney H. Mabry; Fosse, Feb. 14, sponsored by Bob Irwin; and On Golden Pond with Jack Klugman, Feb. 22.

Suzanne SomersPerhaps best known for her roles in the television comedies "Three's Company" and "Step by Step," Somers has enjoyed an on-going love affair with the American public that only grows with the years.

She was named Las Vegas Entertainer of the Year in 1986 in recognition of her putting the razzle-dazzle back on the Vegas stage. She currently performs regularly at Caesar's Palace.
The Stanislavsky Opera Company brings their new production of Giacamo Puccini's La Boheme to the Cowan Center. The audience will experience the moving story of artists living in bohemian Paris during the mid 1800s.

Appearing first on stage with his older brother Maurice and later joined by their dad, Hines has been dancing, singing and performing in front of audiences for most of his life. He received three Tony Award nominations for best actor in a musical for his performances in Eubie, Comin' Uptown and Sophisticated Ladies.

Big band dancersThe Jivin' Lindy Hoppers is a sensational high-energy dance company based in London, England. Whether doing the Lindy Hop, jitterbug or jive, these dancers create excitement with their athleticism, skill and exuberance.

Fosse, the Tony Award-winning hit musical, is a journey in song and dance through the extraordinary career of showman Bob Fosse. Fosse's style and unique vision revolutionized musical theatre with the Broadway hits Sweet Charity, Chicago, Dancin' and the films Cabaret and All that Jazz.

On Golden Pond is a critically acclaimed Broadway production that was adapted as a motion picture, which garnered nine Academy Awards. It depicts a visit with Norman and Ethel Thayer on their 44th year at Golden Pond. Jack Klugman, known for his roles in TV's "The Odd Couple" and "Quincy, M.E.," plays Norman the crusty retired professor.

Front Porch BluesSPECIAL EVENTS
Special events this season will be Front Porch Blues, Oct. 25, sponsored by NBC 56 and Greater Tuna, March 8, sponsored by Southside Bank.

A quintet of extremely talented musicians celebrates the Delta Blues tradition in a way that can only be described as Front Porch Blues. Members of the group have performed with such notable artists as Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Stevie Wonder and Bonnie Raitt.

Greater Tuna is a hilarious comedy that parodies small-town Texas with the city slogan "the Lion's Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies." The eclectic band of citizens is portrayed by only two performers who bring men, women, children and animals to life.

BROADWAY SERIES
Grease is still the word, and it's taking the stage on Nov. 21 at the Cowan Center.

The hit musical, to which America is hopelessly devoted, will be the first performance of the 2002-2003 Broadway Series. The performance is sponsored by Wagner Cadillac.

Other performances are South Pacific, sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Z. Ornelas, Jan. 17, 2003 and Swing, sponsored by Citizen's First Bank, April 24.

The brand new production of Grease will take the audience back to 1959 when beehives and coifs were cool. One of Broadway's longest running musicals, this show takes a hilarious, tuneful and loving look at what it was like growing up in the '50s when hot-rod-loving boys in black leather jackets chased boy-crazy girls in white bobby socks and pedal pushers.

Grease brings back the classic rock 'n' roll sounds of the '50s with such songs as "We Go Together," "Beauty School Dropout" and "It's Raining on Prom Night." Special arrangements have been made to include three songs from the movie, "Hopelessly Devoted to You," "You're the One that I Want" and "Grease."

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Rodgers and Hammerstein's tale of wartime romance on an island paradise is considered to be one of the best musicals ever written.

It features an unforgettable score of timeless classics like "Some Enchanted Evening," "There is Nothing Like a Dame" and "Gonna Wash that Man Right Out of My Hair."

Swing is an agreeable all-singing, all-dancing Broadway musical. The show's mood is upbeat, energetic and positive. Swing is a show dedicated to the style of the Swing music of the 40's. The show includes over 30 dance numbers on any topic you can think of.

The current production made its Broadway debut in 1999. Musical numbers include "It Don't Mean a Thing," "I'll Be Seeing You," "Stompin' at the Savoy" and "Hit Me with a Hot Note and Watch Me Bounce."

DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES
Steve ForbesA debate between Robert Novak and Bill Press, both co-hosts of CNN's "Crossfire," will launch UT Tyler's 2002-2003 Distinguished Lecture Series.

The Tyler Morning Telegraph Lecture featuring Novak and Press will take place at 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at the UT Tyler Cowan Center.

"The debate is an intriguing twist on this educational program. Our audience will get to see the action of CNN's Crossfire live at the Cowan Center," said Susan Thomae-Morphew, Cowan Center director.

The series will conclude with the Vernon and Amy Faulconer Lecture featuring Steve Forbes, president and CEO of Forbes, Inc., at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 20.

Prior to each lecture, a complimentary seminar is held 4:30-5:15 p.m. in the Braithwaite Recital Hall for students with a current ID from any school. The guest lecturer will provide a brief presentation followed by an opportunity to exchange ideas and ask questions.

Novak is one of CNN's most popular and incisive commentators. Co-host of "Evans, Novak, Hunt and Shields," he heads the political roundtable for The Capital Gang and is conservative co-host of "Crossfire."

From investigative reporter to political insider to media star, Press is in a position to examine every issue from every angle. A liberal co-host of "Crossfire," he dodges the well-aimed bullets of his conservative colleagues on a nightly basis. In his book, Spin This!, Press explores the culture of spin to investigate what spin is, who does it and why and its impact on American society.

Forbes is considered one of the most well respected men of our time. As president and CEO of Forbes, Inc. and editor-in-chief of Forbes Magazine, he also runs the nation's foremost business magazine. He is author of A New Birth of Freedom, a book of bold ideas for the new millennium.

He launched a vigorous campaign for the 2000 GOP Presidential race, and although he withdrew in February 2000, his campaign is widely credited for its strong influence on the national debate.
