UT Tyler Students Nominated for Theatrical
Scholarships
Thirteen members
of the UT Tyler student repertory acting company have been officially
nominated to participate in the Kennedy Center American College
Theatre Festival’s Irene Ryan Acting Scholarships competition.
Irene Ryan
Scholarships provide recognition, honor and financial assistance
to outstanding student performers. Each competitor must first be
nominated from a participating or associate theatre production by
an adjudicator or director before receiving an official nomination.
Nominees continue in regional and national competition for performance
scholarships funded by the bequest of actress Irene Ryan, who is
best remembered for her role as “Granny" in the
“Beverly Hillbillies."
UT Tyler juniors
Linda Nylund, music major, and Geanina Barna, theatre major, were
nominated for their performances in “The Fantasticks."
Other UT Tyler
nominees, their majors and the productions for which they were nominated
include seniors Zach Echols, theatre, “Art";
Connie Orr, theatre, “The Sound of Music"; Miranda
Newman, music, “The Sound of Music"; Val Frazee,
theatre, “She’s Shakespeare Loving"; Angela
Binoz, speech, “She's Shakespeare Loving"; Chris
Taylor, theatre, “The King Stag"; and Kyle Halberstadt,
English, “The King Stag."
Also, graduate
students Michael Ward, theatre, “Art"; Jerone
Turner, theatre, “Rosalis"; Beverly Pearson,
English, “Rosalis"; and Darin Fimple, theatre,
“The Fantasticks."
“The
nomination of our students is a special honor," said
Dr. James Hatfield, UT Tyler director of theatre. “Of all
students studying theatre in colleges and universities in our five-state
region this year, there will be less than 150 students so recognized
– and our program has produced 13 student nominations. Our students
possess the skills developed in repertory production that will serve
them well in both the classroom and performance venue."
