Dr. Mary Fischer, UT Tyler professor of accounting, was honored recently by the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants as one of the organization’s 2002 Outstanding Accounting Educators.

At a ceremony held during the TSCPA Accounting Education Conference, Fischer received a traveling trophy and a $1,000 award provided by the TSCPA Accounting Education Foundation.

The TSCPA Outstanding Accounting Educator Awards honor Texas accounting educators who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and have distinguished themselves through active service to the accounting profession.

“This award is very well deserved," said Dr. Jim Tarter, dean of the College of Business and Technology. “Dr. Fischer was nominated by peers who are university faculty. Her pursuit of excellence in everything she does certainly shows up in this award.

“The university, her colleagues, our college and especially our students all benefit from Mary Fischer’s outstanding service. We are proud for Dr. Fischer to be recognized by TSCPA," Tarter said.

Criteria for judging includes instructional innovation, student motivation, the pursuit of learning opportunities for students, involvement and accomplishments in professional accounting organizations, involvement and accomplishments in student accounting organizations, and research accomplishments and publications.

Fischer is the Pirtle Professor of Free Enterprise and director of the master of business administration program. She regularly makes presentations at continuing education and nonprofit seminars.

She is a certified government financial manager and has served on the editorial boards of Issues in Accounting Education; Public Budgeting, Accounting and Financial Management; and Research in Healthcare Financial Management.

Fischer earned doctorate, master’s and undergraduate degrees at the University of Connecticut.
