UT Tyler Theatre Presents 'Rosalis'

The University of Texas at Tyler Theatre Program will present "Rosalis,'' an original chamber theatre play chronicling the life of Tylerite Rosalis Montgomery, Feb. 14-17, Dr. James A. Hatfield, UT Tyler professor and director of theatre, has announced.

The premier performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 14-16 and 2:30 p.m. Feb. 17 in the Braithwaite Recital Hall of the R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center. A reception for Mrs. Montgomery and the audience will follow the Feb. 17 performance.

Tickets are $8 for adult general admission, $6 for seniors and $5 for non-UT Tyler students. UT Tyler students, faculty and staff may receive two complimentary tickets with display of their university identification card. To make reservations for priority seating, call the UT Tyler Theatre Program at (903) 566-7254 during the hours of 1-5 p.m. Tickets may be picked up in the Braithwaite Recital Hall lobby 30 minutes prior to the performance.

"Rosalis'' is based on memoirs from Mrs. Montgomery's books "An Innocent Abroad,'' The Way It Was,'' "Lady in Waiting'' and "My Odyssey.''

As a young woman, Mrs. Montgomery lived and traveled in Europe studying theatre and acting at the Sorbonne in Paris and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. Returning to New York, she was employed by Look magazine as an editorial researcher. Years later, she earned graduate degrees in English from UT Tyler and Southern Methodist University. Her husband, the late J.R. "Bob'' Montgomery, was a civic leader and former Tyler mayor.

"Rosalis Montgomery's four books chronicle her life's journey in vivid detail and capture the spirit of an adventurous young lady whose dreams of a life in the theatre are undaunted by personal hardship and society's view of what a young woman's choices were in the Texas of the 1920s and 1930s," Dr. Hatfield said. "We hope that Rosalis Montgomery's many friends in Tyler and East Texas and audiences that do not yet know her personally will find her story as entertaining, relevant and enlightening as we at UT Tyler have."

The student acting company for "Rosalis'' includes Beverly Pearson, Erica Tecce, Tillie Flores, Regina Van Zandt, Val Frazee, Jerone Turner and Kyle Halberstadt.

Costume designs are by Dr. Mary Ellen Wright; stage management, Amy Clemens; direction, scenic and lighting design and script, Dr. Hatfield; and scenery, Michael Stephens, Michael Hanks and the UT Tyler Theatre Activities Class. Connie Orr is student assistant director. Tracee White is student stage manager.

Copies of Mrs. Montgomery's books will be available for purchase at the performances. The UT Tyler Theatre Department is the beneficiary of proceeds from the sale of her books.
