Debate Team Competes at Louisiana Tournament
Results of the
UT Tyler debate team's participation in the Mardi Gras Madness Debate
Tournament have been announced.
The tournament
was Feb. 8-10 at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, La. Students
from 11 colleges and universities in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi
participated.
The parliamentary
debate team of Aprill Dickerson and Ryan Norris tied for third place
with Rice University by reaching the semifinal round of competition
before losing to Louisiana College.
In the public
debate division, Sarah Cole placed second by reaching the final
round where she lost to a student from Louisiana Tech University.
Coriana Lucas reached the quarterfinal round of public debate and
was recognized as the top novice speaker at the tournament.
The UT Tyler
debate team placed second in overall debate sweepstakes.
In addition
to the above students, UT Tyler students Alice Gerth, Raymond Gerth,
Jr. and Ryan Palmquist all contributed to the sweepstakes total
with wins in preliminary round competition.
The team is
coached by Dr. Jeffrey Hobbs, director of forensics and associate
professor of communication.
