The ballet tells the story of an uprising of gladiators and slaves under the leadership of a young Thracian named Spartacus. Their defeat by troops of the Roman commander Crassus reflects the real events of the Roman history in the first century B.C.

The Grigorovich Company is led by Yuri Grigorovich, who serves as artistic director and chief choreographer. He is considered to be the greatest living choreographer in the world of ballet today. His ballets dominate the repertory of contemporary works, and his stagings of the classic ballets reflect his personal taste.

Spartacus performerGrigorovich was named ballet master at the Kirov in 1962 but transferred to Moscow's Bolshoi in 1964. He served as artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet for 30 years, a tenure in ballet rivaled only by the founding director of the New York City Ballet, George Balanchine.

He founded the Grigorovich Ballet company, which boasts 90 members, in 1990. The company has toured throughout Europe, the Far East and North America.
