High
School Students Challenged to
Build Water Rockets

The Brook
Hill School won the championship at the Second Annual Scrap
Pile Challenge held Feb. 20 at The University of Texas at
Tyler, Dr. Jeffrey Mountain, UT Tyler assistant professor
of mechanical engineering, announced.
The UT
Tyler College of Engineering and Computer Science hosted the
event for high school juniors and seniors in observance of
National Engineers Week. Forty-one students participated.
Brook
Hill, Grace Community and Bishop T. K. Gorman schools and
a group of home-school students were challenged to design
and build a reusable water rocket from a scrap pile provided
by the university. The exact nature of the device and task
was not announced until the students arrived for the competition.
UT Tyler junior and senior engineering students assisted the

Tyler Announces Results of MATHCOUNTS Competition

Grace
Community School placed first in the East Texas regional MATHCOUNTS
competition Feb. 16 at The University of Texas at Tyler, Dr.
David Beams, assistant professor of electrical engineering,
has announced.
Eighty-nine
students from 13 Tyler-area middle schools participated in
four rounds of competition including 40-problem Sprint and
eight-problem Target events for individual competitors, a
10-problem team round and a Countdown for top-scoring individuals
from Sprint and Target rounds. More

Tyler to Host ACM High School Programming Contest
The Ninth
Annual Association for Computer Machinery High School Programming
Contest will be held Friday, March 8, at The University of
Texas at Tyler, Dr. Troy Henson, dean of the College of Engineering
and Computer Science, has announced.
Twenty-one
teams from 12 Texas high schools will participate in the contest
to be held at 9 a.m. at UT Tyler's Robert R. Muntz Library.
Each team,
consisting of four students and an adviser, will be given
a set of problems. The team that solves the maximum number
of problems in four hours is declared the winner, said Dr.
Arun Kulkarni, professor of computer science. Trophies will
be given for the top three winners. More
