UT Tyler Announces New Degree Programs

The University of Texas at Tyler will offer two new master's degrees, Dr. Barbara L. Hart, chair of the Department of Social Sciences, has announced.

The master of science in criminal justice and the master of science in sociology are available this spring. Interested students may apply to this program immediately.

The 36 credit-hour master of science in criminal justice degree will meet the educational needs of several types of students, including existing and prospective criminal justice agency personnel, those wishing teach criminal justice in community colleges, those wanting to prepare for doctoral level work at a later date and anyone wanting to know more about crime and criminal justice, according to Hart.

Core courses at the master's level address the most contemporary trends in criminal justice administration and in public policy relating to justice issues. Beyond the core, students also will be able to elect graduate courses in public administration, economics, psychology, sociology and political science. The last six credit hours in the program may be spent in course work or in thesis preparation.

"The thesis option should be especially attractive to those who want to focus on research and apply to a doctoral program," Hart said.

The master of science in sociology also is a 36-hour program and is designed for students interested in a variety of fields including human resource management, organizational and industrial management, social services, church-related work and any field that deals with the relationship among and between individuals, families and community.

Students may also use the degree to prepare themselves for doctoral work or to teach in junior colleges.

Students in the sociology master's program may choose between a general sociology option and an applied sociology option. The general sociology option is primarily for students wanting to transfer into a doctoral program. The applied sociology option is for students who are interested in seeking employment in the field.

"Both new master's programs are flexible enough to appeal to both full-time and part-time students," Hart said.

The Department of Social Sciences at The University of Texas at Tyler also offers master's degrees in political science and public administration.
