to Host Regional MATHCOUNTS Competition
Ninety students
from 14 middle and junior high schools will participate in the East
Texas regional MATHCOUNTS competition to be hosted by The University
of Texas at Tyler, Dr. David Beams, assistant professor of electrical
engineering, has announced.
The mathematics competition will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16,
at UT Tylers Robert R. Muntz Library.
Students will participate in four rounds of competition including
40-problem Sprint and eight-problem Target events for individual
competitors, a 10-problem team round and a Countdown for top-scoring
individuals from Sprint and Target rounds. Winning schools will
advance to the state competition to be held in March in Austin.
The state winner will advance to the national competition at the
University of Chicago in June.
Participants in the competition at UT Tyler will include Hubbard,
Hogg and Moore middle schools in Tyler Independent School District;
Bishop T. K Gorman Middle School, All Saints Episcopal School, East
Texas Christian Academy and Grace Community Junior High School of
Tyler; E. J. Moss Intermediate School, Lindale; Lindale Junior High
School; Bullard Middle School; Wills Point Junior High School; New
Diana Middle School; Eustace Middle School; and Westwood Junior
High School, Palestine.
MATHCOUNTS is an annual math enrichment program for middle school
students nationwide. Sponsors aim to help improve student interest
and ability in mathematics. They have targeted middle school students,
who are at a crucial stage in sustaining and developing math skills
and interest.
MATHCOUNTS is hosted in Texas by the Texas Society of Professional
Engineers and the Texas Engineering Foundation.
