Tyler Sponsors Freshman Orientation Programs

"The
Compass'' is the official name of freshman orientation at
UT Tyler this year.
"We
chose The Compass to signify that the students are making
some decisions about the direction in which they will go,''
said Shaune Martinez, student development specialist. "Our
goal is to introduce students and their parents to the atmosphere,
the mission and the climate at UT Tyler, both educational
and social.''
Additional
programs for the freshman class of 2002 will include a three-day
Patriot Camp in August and a FishNet program during the

Offers Instruction in Geometric Reasoning
UT Tyler
has been awarded a grant to provide instruction to Tyler school
teachers in geometric reasoning for grades three through five,
Dr. Mark A. Lewis, chair of UT Tyler's Department of Curriculum
and Instruction, announced.
The Texas
Higher Education Coordinating Board approved an Eisenhower
Higher Education Grant for $78,948 to fund the 17-month training
program, a combined effort of UT Tyler and Tyler Independent
School District. Eisenhower grants are awarded to qualified
public and private institutions of higher education and nonprofit
organizations of demonstrated effectiveness to improve and
expand pre-college instruction in mathematics, science or

Patriot
Wall of Honor to Recognize Alumni

UT
Tyler will recognize its past and present graduates by listing
their names on bronze cast plaques featured on the Patriot
Wall of Honor, President Rodney H. Mabry announced.
The wall is expected to be located on the exterior of the

Martinez
Appointed U.T. System Assistant Vice Chancellor
AUSTIN
- Carlos Eduardo Martinez, most recently general counsel to
State Rep. Pete P. Gallego, will coordinate governmental relations
programs with the nine academic component institutions of
the University of Texas System as a new assistant vice chancellor
for governmental relations.
Martinez
will be in charge of an expanded initiative that the U.T.
System is undertaking to coordinate and support governmental
relations between the academic components and their various
legislative representatives in support of public education.
He began work with the U.T. System on June 3. More>>>

Tyler Sponsors Summer Camp for Soccer Players
The University
of Texas at Tyler is sponsoring its first Patriot Summer Soccer
Academy for ages 9-14 this summer.
The first
session was June 24-28. The second session will be July 8-12,

completed 20 years of continuous service at the university
as of July 6. Recognized
for 10 years of continuous service is Vicki J. Clark,

on July 6; and Venita L. McDonald, library assistant
III, on July 13. Recognized
for five years of continuous service is Candace A. Garner,
assistant dean of enrollment management, on July 7.

of Nursing to Participate in School-Based Health Care
The
University of Texas at Tyler College of Nursing has obtained
federal grant funding for the Van Independent School District
to develop and implement a health clinic at Van Independent
School District, Dr. Linda Klotz, UT Tyler College of Nursing
dean, announced.
The
Health Resources Services Administration, a division of
the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded the
three-year $560,556 grant.
Debbie
Waldrop, UT Tyler senior lecturer in nursing and grant project
director, and Dr. Gloria Weber Duke, UT Tyler assistant
dean for research and outreach and grant project principal
investigator, collaborated for more than 16 months with
multi-disciplinary agencies in East Texas to provide health
promotion, health education and health care for more than

Earns Second Place at Biology National Convention
Angela
Roe of Canton received second place in the Frank G. Brooks
Award for Excellence in Student Research at the Tri Beta
National Biological Honor Society 2002 Biennial National
Convention, Dr. James Koukl, The University of Texas at
Tyler associate professor of biology, announced.
Roe, a spring 2002 UT Tyler graduate, presented a paper
detailing her research in determining the normal flora of
the gastrointestinal tract of the three-toed box turtle.
Her presentation was one of almost 80 papers. More>>>

Tyler Students Awarded History Scholarships
The
University of Texas at Tyler students Jonathan D. Clark
of Jacksonville and Seth H. Wilson of Arp are recipients
of history scholarships, Dr. Patricia A. Gajda, professor
of history, has announced.
Clark
is the recipient of the Edwin Morgan Smyrl and Frank H.
Smyrl Endowed History Scholarship Award for 2002. Wilson
is the recipient of the Phil Stacy Jackson History Scholarship

System Employee Advisory Council to Study Key Issues
AUSTIN
- The Employee Advisory Council of the University of Texas
System has begun a study of key issues facing university
staff such as "best practices" for compensation
and the possibility of waiving tuition and fees for employees
who enroll in academic programs.
The 32-member council, which includes two representatives
from each component institution of the system as well as
the system administration, has formed committees on benefits,
compensation, communications and policy to conduct research
and make recommendations to the Board of Regents. More>>>

A
virtual catalog is available for the Meadows Gallery exhibit
"Covered/(Dis)Covered/(Re)Covered: A Contemporary Book
Arts Invitational.''
The
exhibit, featuring works of several nationally known artists,
opened May 20 and continues through Aug. 2 at the gallery,
located in the Cowan Center.
