Spring Commencement Recognizes 443 Candidates

The University of Texas at Tyler recognized 443 degree candidates during spring commencement Saturday at the UT Tyler Cowan Center.

The honorable Rita C. Clements, vice chairman of The University of Texas System Board of Regents, was guest speaker. President Mabry certified the degree candidates and Regent Clements conferred degrees.

Presentation of degree candidates was by Dr. David H. O'Keeffe, provost and vice president for academic affairs; and by the deans of each of the university's colleges: Dr. Donna L. Dickerson, Arts and Sciences; Dr. Jim Tarter, Business and Technology; Dr. J. Milford Clark, Education and Psychology; Dr. Troy F. Henson, Engineering and Computer Science; and Dr. Linda K. Klotz, Nursing and Health Sciences. Dr. Robert H. Cranford and Dr. Keith McCoy, senior faculty members, were macebearers. More>>>

UT Tyler Athletics Hires Cross Country and Golf Coaches

The University of Texas at Tyler Athletics program has appointed two new coaches, Dr. Howard Patterson, interim dean of student affairs and athletics director, announced.

Matt Owings and David A. Cline will serve as cross-country and golf coaches, respectively.

Both sports will feature men's and women's teams and will begin competition in the fall.

Owings, who also is a lecturer in the UT Tyler Department of Health and Kinesiology, has been involved in running for almost 20 years. Having run 11 marathons, he has trained adult runners and assisted in instructing an adult marathon training program.

UT TeleCampus Online Master's Degree Wins National Honors

The online master's in kinesiology degree program offered by The University of Texas at Tyler and five other schools in The University of Texas System won the 2002 Excellence in Distance Learning - Higher Education Award, Dr. Linda Klotz, dean of the UT Tyler College of Nursing and Health Sciences, announced.

This is the second consecutive year the UT System TeleCampus has received the national excellence award from the United States Distance Learning Association. Last year's award was given for the collaborative online master's in business administration program. The Excellence in Distance Learning awards program acknowledges major accomplishments in distance learning and highlights instructors, programs and distance learning professionals who have achieved excellence in the field.

Glover-Johnson to Address Student Success

Chearlene Glover-JohnsonChearlene Glover-Johnson has joined The University of Texas at Tyler as student development specialist IV in the department of student affairs.

In her role as student development specialist, Glover-Johnson will design and implement an academic success monitoring program utilizing instructor grade/attendance checks and mid-term grade reports; provide students continuing feedback on degree progress; identify students at risk of failure; and create regular progress reports on freshman retention. She also will develop degree plans for first-year students, assist students in selecting courses and facilitate successful freshman interaction with campus support services. More>>>

Construction Updates

Health and Kinesiology Physical Education Building - Work in progress includes grade beams, pier caps; lowering of primary power, telephone and EMCS; and underground rough-in of soil piping for roof leaders.

College of Nursing and Health Sciences Building - C Construction Co. will be mobilizing, installing perimeter fencing and laying out the construction project boundaries during the week of May 13.

Residence Hall - Architect being sought for construction of 11,000-square-foot facility on Lake Drive with the capacity to house 36-40 students.

Longview University Center parking lot - Request for proposal responses have been received and are under evaluation for construction of an 85-space, lighted parking lot.

Longview University Center monument signs - An agreement has been executed with an architect.
