New Master of Fine Arts Degree Approved

The art program at UT Tyler is now accepting applications for its new master of fine arts degree in studio art.

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board recently approved the graduate degree. UT Tyler will begin admitting students to the degree program in January 2003.

"We are delighted that the program was approved, and look forward to being able to provide talented artists in East Texas and surrounding areas an opportunity to pursue the terminal degree in studio art," said Dr. Donna Dickerson, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

The MFA requires 60 hours of graduate coursework in studio art, art history/criticism and thesis or thesis/exhibition. After completion of the first 15 hours of studio coursework, each MFA candidate will submit a portfolio of works for faculty review to determine continuation on the MFA track.

Students will choose their studio focus either in two-dimensional art, such as painting, drawing or printmaking or three-dimensional art, such as ceramics, sculpture and small metals.

"As is typical in MFA programs, students are expected to be self-motivated since much of the studio work is unstructured and self-directed with mentoring by faculty," said Dr. Gary Hatcher, art program chair.

Applicants should hold a bachelor of fine arts degree from an accredited university and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on all upper-level coursework.

Each applicant must submit a portfolio of 20 slides of original work, an essay demonstrating writing competence, three letters of recommendation and a statement of intent regarding why the applicant wishes to pursue the MFA degree at UT Tyler.

"Students who come to UT Tyler for their MFA will be working with an exceptional group of faculty artists who exhibit both on a national and international level," said Dr. John Webb, director of the School of Visual and Performing Arts.

Interested students are encouraged to contact Hatcher at 566-7250 or ghatcher@mail.uttyl.edu. www.uttyler.edu/Arts/studioarts
