Johnsons to Present Recital
at Marvin UMC
UT
Tyler assistant professors of music Dr. Mark Johnson, tenor, and
Dr. Molly Johnson, mezzo-soprano, will present a sacred recital
at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, at Marvin United Methodist Church.
 |
They
will be joined by Ruth Morrow, Jeffery Ford and Fred Gunderson
on viola, organ and piano.
The recital
is part of the Marvin Concert Series, and includes classical
and popular sacred music of composers such as Bernstein, Purcell,
Vaughan Williams and Duke Ellington. The recital features
Benjamin Britten’s Canticle II, a duet setting of the
story of Abraham and Isaac from the Chester Miracle Plays,
and Luigi Zaninelli’s arrangements of five favorite
gospel songs.

Molly
Johnson seeks variety as an artist and is equally at home in operas
and musicals. She has performed with such companies as Asheville
Lyric Opera, Baton Rouge Opera, Music Theater of Wichita and Lyric
Theater of Oklahoma. Favorite roles include “The Mother’’
in Amahl and the Night Visitors, “Prince Orlovsky’’
in Die Fledermaus, “Mercedes’’ in Carmen and the
“Old Lady’’ in Candide.
She also enjoys oratorio,
and has been soloist in Handel's Messiah, Rutter's Magnificat, Fauré's
Requiem, Tippett's A Child of Our Time and Mendelssohn's Elijah.
Classical recitals, sacred concerts and musical theatre cabarets
are among the smaller forms she prepares and presents.
Having been
involved in public performances since his youth, Mark Johnson has
more than 40 years of stage and music industry experience. During
his college years, he appeared as a featured student-artist with
the Tulsa Opera, the Four Corners Opera in Durango, Colo., and the
Public Opera of Dallas. More recently, he has appeared with the
Baton Rouge Opera, the Asheville Lyric Opera and the Montreat Bach
Festival. In March he sang the role of “Ariel’’
in the Tyler Civic Chorale’s presentation of Haydn’s
Creation. In addition, he has sung before audiences in Germany,
France and Mexico, and coached with well-known German soprano Kristine
Weidinger.
His professional performing
career has continued with particular emphasis on oratorio and recital
appearances, and he has traveled and performed extensively for community
organizations and churches throughout the United States. He also
has work experience in the music industry. As a member of the TV
Singers at Oral Roberts University, he worked in the television
and recording industry for several years, including work on sound
stages and in the studio in Hollywood and Nashville.
The recital
is free and open to the public. For more information, call Marvin
